Wine Access Tasting Note

A dark and concentrated ruby-cored wine with a flash of magenta. The nose offers a generous landscape full of dark fruit, dried violets, and lavender, with notes of Darjeeling tea and mocha. On the palate, this beautiful beast shows wild blackberry and Mission plum, accented with plenty of spice and mocha and a hint of fresh mint. The structure is dominant and broad, with stern tannins and balanced acidity. A world-class red of power, consequence, and finesse. Drink now–2040.

Wine Advocate

The 2019 Aluvional Paraje Altamira comes from the south of Altamira or "new Altamira" (Altamira is not yet divided, but they have ideas...), and they used 80% to 100% full clusters and stems—one of the highest, because there's a lot of limestone. But this wine is always foot trodden because they want to avoid carbonic maceration, or sometimes they destem the grapes and add the stems back in a kind of lasagna, with layers. It matured exclusively in their raw concrete vats. The wine is serious, with an austere nose and some serious fruit (it's slightly lower in alcohol than the other two). It's very chalky and has very fine tannins and a texture that can be reminiscent of a Barolo, with some flowers emerging after some time in the glass. 8,200 bottles were filled in June 2020.

This Is the Collector’s Secret

We believe that most American wine lovers would be instantly converted if they tried a truly world-class Malbec.

These are wines so complete—so seamlessly complex and powerful—that they shame any Napa Cabernets near them in price. But unless you've dined in a Michelin-starred restaurant in Argentina or worked with one of the few somms in the US who know about and stock them, you've probably never even encountered one.

We live and work in Napa and love Napa Cabs—and we think that if most high-end Napa drinkers worked their way through a bottle of this, especially with a nice steak, they wouldn't hesitate to make room next to the $200 Cabernets in their cellar.

Sebastián Zuccardi is one of the shooting stars of Argentine wine. His vision for the future of his local wine industry is crystal clear and ambitious—and the wines he makes under the Aluvional label show off his attention to detail and passion.

A winemaker with an incredibly contagious passion for terroir, Zuccardi is so obsessed with the region that he constructed his winery from the stones of his vineyards—a feat that earned the winery "World's Best Vineyard" from CNN in 2019, the year this wine was grown. His mad-scientist-level attention to detail also recently granted him a spot on Decanter's list of South America's Top 10 winemakers.

This bottle highlights Mendoza's prestigious Paraje Altamira appellation, where Malbec grows small, intensely-colored bunches at nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. Those tiny berries bring impressive concentration and power to the finished bottle, which we plan on cellaring for at least the next decade. You should do the same.
