The Story

CVNE has been a pillar of Rioja since 1879, the house behind the first Spanish wine ever named Wine of the Year. Real de Asúa is its tribute to the founding family—and since 2018, a single-vineyard bottling drawn from one tiny, high-elevation plot in the hills of Rioja Alta. Here's the story of how one of Spain's great estates distilled its name into a single, beautifully made wine.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Majestic and complex, with a deep ruby core. With just a pour, effusive aromas burst from the glass: fresh blackberries, piles of violets, toasted orange peel, black and red currants, dark cherries, vanilla bean, toast, and 75%-cocoa dark chocolate. A joy on the palate, with fine, smooth, refined tannins perfectly balanced by juicy acidity and rich flavors of crushed raspberries, licorice, peonies, mocha bean, and freshly hewn cedar. Showing beautifully now, but with much more to say in the years ahead. Drink now–2040.

James Suckling

A full-bodied, ripe and delicious red with firm, lightly chewy tannins. Lots of cherries, dried flowers, coconut and rosemary. Lavender and white roses, too. Firm and very well structured. Tight and fresh at the end. First year with single vineyard on the label. 100% tempranillo. Try this after 2025.

Wine Advocate

The modern 2019 Real de Asúa has been produced since 2018 with grapes from a paraje in the village of Villalba called Carromaza (now mentioned on the label) on sandy, south-facing soils that were harvested between the 8th and 9th of October. 2019 was a low-yielding year with loose and small bunches that ripened thoroughly delivering wines that are balanced and have aging potential. It's 14.5% alcohol and has mellow acidity and good freshness and balance. It fermented in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts followed by malolactic in new French oak barrels and then matured in new and second use French barriques for 12 months. The wine is very impressive, showy, clean and harmonious, without any noticeable oak, juicy, harmonious, young, fresh and elegant. It has concentration, power and finesse. It has a new label and bottle and a much more modern image but with the essence form the past. The wine has improved a lot, and it has grip and very fine tannins. Very impressive. It has the naked essence of Rioja without the layers and layers of oak, now from a single vineyard where they want freshness and a lush but floral and delicate profile you have to drink effortlessly. Superb. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2022.

Rioja's Top Shelf

Real de Asúa is the wine Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España named after its own founders. That's not a decision a winery makes lightly, and CVNE—or Cune, as it's known in the town of Haro—is not a winery that needs to reach for gestures. Founded in 1879 by brothers Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa, it has become one of the most decorated names in all of Spain, the house whose Imperial Gran Reserva was the first Spanish wine ever named Wine of the Year. When a family with that history puts its own name on a label, it means the wine has earned it.

The bottling was created in 1994 as a tribute to the two brothers. For most of its life it was a blended Reserva, drawn from several sites. Then, beginning with the 2018 vintage, the family made a bold change: they narrowed it to a single vineyard, a 2.37-hectare plot called Carromaza, and put that plot's name on a redesigned label. It was a statement of confidence—that one small piece of ground could speak for the whole estate.

Carromaza lies in the village of Villalba, in the cool heights of Rioja Alta, its rows climbing between roughly 530 and 555 meters. This is a demanding spot. Atlantic winds sweep through, frost is a genuine risk, and only the shelter of the Sierra de Cantabria keeps the site in balance. The Tempranillo vines, around 30 years old, are trellised against the wind and planted on sandy, south-facing slopes. What the elevation and the breezes give in return is freshness and lift—the quality that separates a good Rioja from a memorable one.

In the cellar, the treatment befits the name. Grapes are hand-harvested into small crates, chilled, and sorted twice—once in the vineyard, again on arrival. Whole berries are gently crushed and gravity-fed into a small French oak vat, where native yeasts carry the fermentation. Malolactic fermentation follows in new French oak, and the wine rests around 12 months in French barriques. The aim throughout is restraint: to let the vineyard, not the oak, do the talking.

The result is a modern face of classic Rioja—cherry-hued and brooding, with dark forest fruit, licorice, sweet spice, and a whisper of toast, all framed by fine, balanced tannins. It is, as one longtime observer of the region put it, the naked essence of Rioja without the layers and layers of oak. This is what one of Spain's great estates can do when it decides to sign its family name to a single, small vineyard.
