The Story

Robert Parker called DeLille Cellars “the Lafite-Rothschild of Washington State,” and their 2022 D2 Red Wine is built to thrill. The 30th bottling of this outstanding Bordeaux-style blend, it comes from an absolute Murderer’s Row of sources: Red Willow, Harrison Hill, Ciel du Cheval, Klipsun, Boushey, DuBrul, Upchurch, and Grand Ciel. Wine & Spirits named DeLille to their Top 100 Wineries list six times out of the last seven years, and one Wine Access member has hailed the D2 as the “best blend we've ever bought from Wine Access.” Hard to beat that!

Wine Access Tasting Note

Dark crimson with purple core. The nose opens with enticing aromas of blackcurrant, red plum, and dark cherry interwoven with subtle hints of cedar, graphite, and clove. On the palate, the wine unfolds with layers of ripe blackberry, blueberry compote, and dried herbs, all underscored by a touch of mocha and iron ore. The supple tannins provide a silky texture, while a juicy acidity balances the richness. The finish is long and graceful, leaving traces of cocoa nibs and preserved violets. Drink now–2035.

A Grand Tour of Washington’s Best Sites

Robert Parker called DeLille Cellars “the Lafite-Rothschild of Washington State.” And their 2022 D2 Red Wine is built to thrill.

The 30th bottling of this outstanding Bordeaux-style blend, the ‘22 shows the structure, savoriness, and intricacy of the Médoc greats. It comes from an absolute Murderer’s Row of sources: Red Willow, Harrison Hill, Ciel du Cheval, Klipsun, Boushey, DuBrul, Upchurch, and Grand Ciel. These are the best vineyards in Washington State, and they’re all represented in this blend.

Wine & Spirits named DeLille to their Top 100 Wineries list six times out of the last seven years—but it was 30 years ago when DeLille’s head winemaker, Chris Upchurch, first made D2. In doing so, he forged the trail for Bordeaux-style blends in Washington state. He’s spent the last quarter-century perfecting his art, even whipping up a blend on the morning of his own wedding, leaving him with wine-stained hands at his nuptials. That combination of relentless dedication and all-star sites makes this wine truly exceptional.

Comprising 56% Merlot, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 4% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc the wine offers a delicious trek through the Columbia Valley’s most acclaimed Washington appellations. Upchurch and winemaker Nick Bernstein maximize the grapes’ potential, eliciting further complexity by aging the wine for 20 months in French oak, 47% of it new. It spent another eight months in bottle before release.

We put some of this in our cellars every single year—for the price, it’s hard to find a Bordeaux blend in Napa, Washington, or France that offers this sort of quality and vineyard pedigree for the price.
