The Story

The 2021 Smith-Madrone Spring Mountain Cabernet is one of the greatest vintages ever for the estate, and is as fine a deal as you can find in the Valley, especially for a wine with this much character and aging potential, not to mention 97-point scores from both Wine Enthusiast—where it earned Editors' Choice honors and was named to their Top 100 Wines—and Decanter magazine. The winery is treasured for its classic profile and stunning value, which is why you’ll find it in the cellars of some of the savviest collectors out there—and on the list at MICHELIN-starred PRESS in St. Helena, the revered La Toque in Napa, and the Little Nell in Aspen.

Wine Access Tasting Note

A classic Mountain Cabernet from one of Napa's legacy producers. Aromas of dark berries are cradled by violet and lilac, with licorice and spice weaving woven in with tobacco and incense. The palate is thought-provoking and multidimensional: It’s full of spice, black fruit, and graphite, with a rich texture built on stern tannins that deliver a long-lasting finish. Drink now–2045.

Wine Enthusiast

Editors' Choice. This Cabernet exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic and finessed. An impossible find for the price, it’s one to enjoy now for palate-cleansing structure, or continue to age for deeper pleasure.

From brothers Stu and Charlie Smith comes their 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, a precise blend of 81.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.7% Cabernet Franc, and 0.4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, with only 1,652 cases produced, this wine showcases the meticulous dry farming of their 15.4-hectare vineyard at a 579-metre elevation, with vines dating back to 1971. The 2021 vintage is yet another testament to their mastery, offering a purity and elegance that define these Cabernets, with impeccable structure for long-term cellaring. In 2021, the tannins are firm, soaring, built like sky-scrapers, yet remarkably well-integrated. The nose offers a beautiful black cherry and red currant potpourri, mingling with pressed wildflowers, sage, capsicum, and tobacco leaf. Juicy plum fruit intertwines with a graphite minerality, and while there’s notable density to the fruit, a fine backbone of crunchy acidity imparts a stunning lightness and lift. Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems.

Very Few Napa Cabs are Like This

When wine lovers want a glimpse into a previous generation of Napa Valley—when they're interested in a style that is still possible but hardly common—Smith-Madrone is on a very short list of producers we recommend.

Smith-Madrone is one of the benchmark Spring Mountain producers, perfectly balancing the structure of mountain fruit with the rugged, cool herbal tones of Cabernet from a cooler pocket of the Valley. While much of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon succumbs to stylistic and aesthetic pressures, the willingness of the Smith brothers to continually produce wines of honesty and purity is inspirational—and their pricing is a throwback to an earlier time.

Smith-Madrone sits on backbreaking slopes between 1,300 and 2,000 feet in elevation. In the early 1970s, Smith studied his Spring Mountain landscape for a year before deciding to plant, and his Cab is on the prime south- and west-facing blocks. The red volcanic soils are rocky and rugged, a stressful environment for vines to live in, and that's exactly how Stu Smith wants it. He's famous for providing no irrigation whatsoever, a practice that yields intense flavor-bomb grapes.

That yields wines that age famously well. PRESS, here in Napa, has probably the deepest collection of California Cabernet of any restaurant in the world, and they prized older Smith-Madrone. Not long ago, they had the 2004, ‘05, and ‘06 on our list—and all of them are absolute stars. With time, these open up and blossom into dynamic bottles that are beautifully aromatic and elegantly textured. But as the stellar member-ratings attest, Wine Access members love these in their youth, as well. Just be sure to throw it in a decanter.
