The Story

Lemelson’s 2021 Thea’s Selection is Oregon Pinot Noir at its truest and most focused. This bottle, grown in one of the best Willamette Valley vintages in memory, shows the striking terroir-driven purity and transparency found in bottles twice the price. That’s why it earned rock-solid praise from a host of critics: Vinous, Wine Spectator, and Decanter all deemed it a 92-pointer, with Decanter declaring it "at $40 is a tremendous value.” It’s the epitome of organic, finely detailed Oregon Pinot, from a top vintage and a suite of stellar vineyards.

Critic Reviews

92 pts

Vinous

A smoky blend of wild herbs, ground ginger and crushed raspberries smolders up from the 2021 Pinot Noir Thea’s Selection. It’s softly textured with cooling minerality and pure red berry fruits underscored by saline minerals. Zesty acidity adds a liveliness through the finish as the 2021 tapers off long and spicy yet only lightly tannic.

92 pts

Wine Spectator

Brisk and generous, with snappy cherry and pomegranate flavors highlighted by oolong tea and savory spices. Concludes with fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2031.

92 pts

Decanter

A cuvée cobbled together from Lemelson's five organic estate sites, the 2021 Thea's Selection shows an earthy elegance from the outset. Aromas of forest floor and evergreen tips meet candied raspberries and a kiss of spice from white pepper. The palate is elegant and framed with a savoury umami character. Bright strawberries, hints of black tea and clove and a sweet cherry depth that carries the finish. This wine at $40 is a tremendous value.

Oregon Grace in a Bottle

Thea’s Selection is sourced from five of Lemelson’s estate vineyards, but the key to this wine is that most of it comes from their holdings in the Yamhill-Carlton District. Home to luminaries like Soter, Shea, and Ken Wright, Yamhill-Carlton is the AVA that produces the Willamette Valley’s most black-fruited, dense, and ripe Pinot Noirs. Lemelson’s perfectly manicured vines have been farmed organically since inception, a practice in keeping with founder Eric Lemelson’s overarching philosophy of sustainability.

Lemelson, who moved to Oregon in the late ‘70s, was an environmental lawyer before falling in love with Pinot Noir and planting his first vineyard in 1995. He built and continues to improve his gravity-flow winery, which processed its first harvest in 1999, using the most environmentally sound methods and materials available.

While costly, the result of Lemelson’s powerful and comprehensive winemaking vision shines in the glass through striking, terroir-driven purity and transparency—the kind found in bottles twice the price. This is what Oregon tastes like at its truest and most focused.

With its dry conditions and low yields, 2021 was a landmark year for Willamette Valley wines, with one veteran winemaker saying, “It will certainly rank as one of our top five vintages. It’s certainly a great vintage in the making and I don’t say that lightly.”

At the end of the day, this is another show stopping Pinot Noir from one of the Willamette Valley’s finest. We locked in every case we could, and we highly recommend following suit.
