The Story

At The French Laundry, Alban’s Reva Syrah is on the list at $345. Sine Qua Non is well represented—between $1,500 to $7,500. And rubbing shoulders with these collectibles is Jeremy Weintraub’s 2019 Site Wines Bien Nacido, one of the most stirring California Syrahs you’ll ever taste. “The 2019 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous,” wrote Antonio Galloni of Vinous, while Jeb Dunnuck called it a “primordial beast” in his 95+ point review. From Santa Barbara’s revered Bien Nacido Vineyard, one of the Grand Crus of California, it’s a small-production stunner that shows why Site Wines are on the fast track to cult status.

Wine Access Tasting Note

In the glass, a deep, dark, dense magenta/ruby core. The nose is dark and plush, with tones of blackberry, cassis, cracked pepper, plums, and black cherry. There is a tone of vanilla-smoked wild game, flowers, a kiss of smoke, and dried meat. The wine is rich and rounded on the palate, with a full-bodied silkiness that is absolutely seductive. The long, spicy finish is polished and supple, offering a lot to ponder. Another excellent Syrah from the Site team. Drink now–2035

Jeb Dunnuck

Beautiful blue fruits, cracked pepper, iron, and violet nuances define the 2019 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyards, a rich, powerful, concentrated Syrah from this great site that's full-bodied, has no shortage of concentration, good acidity, and one heck of a finish. It's a primordial beast at the moment, but still pure and balanced, with a wonderful sense of elegance in its tannins. Hide bottles for 2-4 years if you can.

Fast Track to Cult Status

Decorated with 95+ point praise and grown on the legendary cool-climate Bien Nacido Vineyard, the 2019 Site Wines Bien Nacido Syrah is one of the greatest and most complex Syrah expressions in California.

“The 2019 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is fabulous,” starts Antonio Galloni’s rave. “Even with all of its natural richness, the 2019 remains fresh and vibrant in the glass. It is quite simply one of the very finest wines I have tasted from Jeremy Weintraub.”

With just a few barrels produced, this bottle is just about impossible to find at retail. Most of it went to The French Laundry and its MICHELIN-starred ilk. Our access grew out of a friendship between Wine Access Master Sommelier Sur Lucero and Site owner Jeremy Weintraub.

Owned and operated by Weintraub—the former Seavey (Napa) and current Adelaida (Paso Robles) winemaker—Site’s objective is to explore a trio of world-class vineyards. Jeremy lets the terroir and vintage dictate the style, without any dogma or preconceptions. It’s a philosophy that has landed his wines in regular rotation at spots like The French Laundry, SingleThread, Meadowood, and Lazy Bear.

Bien Nacido has few—maybe no—equals in the pantheon of Santa Barbara County sites. The vineyard’s elevation, loamy soil, and ocean-controlled mild temperatures form a cradle that heightens the Syrah’s broad-shouldered concentration, as the cool climate tightens the tension and energy that are crucial to the grape.
