The Story

Luc Morlet has twenty 100-point wines to his name, and his rare 2019 Force Tranquille—grown in an absolutely gorgeous vintage—takes its place among Napa Valley’s great bottles. Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it “a stunning debut,” and Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Independent used the same adjective in her glowing 99-point review. This bottle is no less than a masterclass in Cabernet Franc, and it is guaranteed to turn a lot of heads when you finally bring it up from the cellar.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Midnight purple with a deep, opaque core. After a decant, the wine opens with aromas of crushed blackberries, Morello cherry, fresh rose petals, violets, bittersweet chocolate, candied plums, pencil shavings, tilled earth, and sage. Perfumed on the palate, it gives mixed florals, cocoa butter, blueberry pie, iron ore, chocolate mint, and black tea. The texture oozes luxury, with ripe super-fine tannins, creamy acidity, and a long finish. Full-bodied and as bold as it is elegant, this is a masterclass in Cabernet Franc. Drink now–2040.

The Wine Independent

The 2019 Cabernet Franc Force Tranquille is made from 85% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it wafts out of the glass with a beautifully fragrant nose of black cherries, red roses, redcurrant preserves, and blackberry pie, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, wild sage, and damp soil. The full-bodied palate has so much energy, with a lively line lifting the intense red and black fruit layers, supported by super-ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and perfumed. This is the first vintage of this wine, with all the fruit coming from Morlet's Coeur de Valle Vineyard in Oakville. The Cabernet Franc component is all Clone 1 on Riparia Gloire rootstock. It is a stunning, more elegantly styled expression of Cabernet Franc, compared to the powerful character of the Force de la Nature Vineyard. 300 cases were made.

Dark shades of fruit intermingled with spice, dried herbs, leather and coffee lend soaring complexity. Franc can be magical in Oakville, as it is here. Superb.

A Master’s Debut

Luc Morlet is undoubtedly one of the great craftsmen in Napa Valley.

Connoisseurs have long known that Napa Valley Cabernet Franc can be as profound as the region’s greatest Cabernet Sauvignons, and Morlet’s Force Tranquille—grown in the absolutely gorgeous 2019 vintage—takes its place among the greats. Comprising Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, both from Morlet’s Coeur de Vallée Vineyard in Oakville, Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it “a stunning debut,” and Lisa Perrotti-Brown of The Wine Independent used the same adjective in her 99-point review. Born into a winemaking family that goes back five generations in Champagne, Luc was stirring barrel-fermented Chardonnay when he was just a schoolboy. Love for his American sweetheart brought him to California, where he quickly reached the top rung of the Chardonnay ladder, replacing John Kongsgaard at Newton. Later, as the winemaker for Peter Michael, he continued Helen Turley’s legacy and racked up over 30 wines rated 94–99 points from Wine Advocate in just five years. Then, 16 years ago, Luc turned his focus to Morlet Family Vineyards. 

He’s been making history ever since. Only 300 cases of this wine were made, and its stature is sure to grow as it ages in your cellar. Here’s to the day you savor it!
