The Story

To get a sense of Ross Cobb’s status on the Sonoma Coast, just look at the wineries that have recruited him: Burt Williams and Bob Cabral of Williams-Selyem nabbed him in 1998. Flowers hired him away in 2000, eventually making him head winemaker. Then David Hirsch called, asking to do the same, in 2009. Ross’s 2019 Doc’s Ranch Pinot Noir makes it easy to see why his wines currently have SEVEN slots on the list at the MICHELIN three-star SingleThread. It earned 97 points from both Decanter and Wine Advocate, who marveled at its “sheer intensity of fruit.” A blue-chip bottle that stands with the best of the region.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Bright ruby with a pink rim. Aromas of cranberry cocktail, red grapefruit peel, holiday spice, and Bing cherry on the nose. The flavors build on the palate: layers of raspberry jam, cut cedar, French vanilla, wintergreen, and salty minerals. Perfectly ripe red fruit is counterbalanced by hard spices, mint, and fine minerals. Silky texture and an endless finish. Drink now–2039.

Wine Advocate

Medium ruby, the 2019 Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch opens with pomegranate, rhubarb and raspberry preserves accented by tones of cinnamon, blood orange, dried sage, potpourri and bitters, offering more nuance with each return to the glass. The palate surprises with its sheer intensity of fruit, supported by ubiquitous, sandy tannins and seamless acidity, finishing long and spicy.

97 pts

Decanter

The Doc's Ranch, as Ross explains, sits just on the other side of a ridgeline from the Coastlands Vineyard, it benefits from the southeastern exposure, and the coastal winds are buffetted by the ridgeline. A stunning wine. Aromatic elegance with notes of candied strawberries, and wintergreen. The palate is lithe and packed with verve. Bright red fruits mix with savoury notes, fine earthen minerality and lively acid.

A Masterclass in a Glass

To get a sense of Ross Cobb’s status on the Sonoma Coast, just look at the wineries that have recruited him: Burt Williams and Bob Cabral of Williams-Selyem nabbed him in 1998. Flowers hired him away in 2000, eventually making him head winemaker. Then David Hirsch called, asking to do the same, in 2009.

Ross’s 2019 Doc’s Ranch Pinot Noir makes it easy to see why his wines currently have SEVEN slots on the list at the MICHELIN three-star SingleThread. It earned 97 points from both Decanter and Wine Advocate, who marveled at its “sheer intensity of fruit.”

Coastlands Vineyard (and later Cobb Wines) came to life through the hands of Ross and Stephen Cobb, alongside their folks David and Diane, who started out as home winemakers with a backyard vineyard in Mill Valley. The couple decided to go pro in 1989, relocating to Occidental. There, atop a hill with a view of Bodega Bay, the whole family worked together to plant four acres of Pinot Noir. Williams-Selyem bought the first five vintages of his fruit, and they vineyard-designate a Coastlands Pinot Noir to this day.

The family launched Cobb Wines in 2001, and part of Ross’s business plan—like luminaries Littorai and Peay—was to focus primarily on restaurants, and that has paid off. The wines are in the greatest restaurants in Northern California, but it’s rare at retail. We’re thrilled to have gotten it for you.
