The Story

The 99-point 2019 might just be Château Valandraud’s finest wine yet—and for an estate that has garnered comparisons to Napa’s cult Cabernets, that’s really saying something. Wine Enthusiast called it “the best yet from this estate” in their 99-point review. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it a 99-point score, tying it for the highest rating—one he awarded to only three other 2019 Saint-Émilions. For Bordeaux collectors, it’s a cellar must-have.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Richly saturated midnight-purple color. Regal aromas of incense, purple flowers, Alpine herbs, cedar, graphite, and laurel dance around a core of fresh blackberries and plums. The fruit becomes more powerful on the palate, showing as berry compote. The refined oak gives polish and structure plus decadent flavors of cocoa, Madagascar vanilla, toast, and allspice. Massively rich with pixelated tannins and an ultra-sleek minty finish. Drink now–2050.

Jeb Dunnuck

The local bad boy of Bordeaux, Jean-Luc Thunevin, continues to fashion truly brilliant wines, and his 2019 is no exception. Based largely on Merlot with small amount of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Château Valandraud is a deep purple-hued beauty offering up a kaleidoscope-like bouquet of black and blue fruits, scorched earth, chocolate, gravelly earth, spicy oak, and sappy flowers. Deep, rich, full-bodied, and wonderfully concentrated, it has insane purity of fruit, brilliant tannins, a stacked mid-palate, and just has everything in the right places. It's up with the top wines of the vintage and a tour de force that readers should snatch up. It shows a very different style than the sexier 2018, but it's every bit as good. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 2-3 decades.

Wine Enthusiast

This is a dense and luscious wine, the best yet from this estate. Its great structure and tannins show a style that is powerful but all within. This is a magnificent vintage from this Premier Grand Cru Classé estate, and fully deserves to be aged for many years.

Bordeaux’s Bad Boy Goes Blue Chip

With their 99-point 2019, Château Valandraud has made their best wine yet—which is saying something.

The estate burst onto the Bordeaux scene in the early 90s, immediately drawing comparisons to cult Napa Cabernets. Owner Jean-Luc Thunevin earned his moniker as the “Bad Boy of Bordeaux” for a series of flamboyantly powerful wines made in a garage, challenging the region’s established power structures.

Like Napa’s Cult bottlings, Thunevin’s garagiste operation has grown up into one of the blue-chip bottlings on the Right Bank. Today, the vineyards have been upgraded, the winemaking facility is a no-expense-spared cathedral of vinification, and under the guidance of superstar consultant Michel Rolland, Thunevin is making the best wines of his career.

Praise for the 2019 Valandraud has been widespread and full-throated. Wine Enthusiast called it “the best yet from this estate” in their 99-point review. Jeb Dunnuck also gave it 99 points, tying it for the highest rating—one he awarded to only three other 2019 Saint-Émilions. Vinous lauded it as “a towering, statuesque wine that captures all the best the vintage had to offer.”

Three decades ago, Thunevin quit his day job to make wine in one of the world’s most revered regions. He had little money, no cellar of his own, and most importantly, no fear of enraging the appellation’s power structure. That came in handy when Valandraud surpassed wines made by vignerons who had criticized his early efforts.

Thunevin’s reputation grew, and Rolland added his expertise. Then, in 2012, Valandraud became enshrined as one of the great wines of the Right Bank when it was classified Premier Grand Cru Classé.

The 2019 Château Valandraud is a prime example of what made Thunevin a star.
