The Story

Located on the Pauillac plateau directly across from First Growth giant Mouton Rothschild, Château Pontet-Canet always had the raw material for greatness. Now, this biodynamically farmed estate is one of the best arguments that the 1855 classification needs a healthy reshuffling. James Suckling called the 2019 “Really amazing…succulent and unadulterated,” and “an absolute joy” in his 99-point review. Wine Enthusiast agreed, calling it “so perfumed…so refined and vibrant.” We’re thrilled to bring this parcel direct from the cool cellars of the Château. It’s a collectible that will only grow in stature with time, but it’s limited to a handful of cases.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Lush, powerful and elegant with a deep garnet with a hint of purple. A nose packed with black plum, cassis, damp earth, pencil lead, cedar, and vanilla bean. Dark fruits richly interwoven with spice and earth. Allspice, clove, and cedar swirl on the dense palate, seasoning dark cherries, fig, and black raspberry. Menthol and dried herbs carry throughout, adding lift and elegance. The full body is weighty and matched with a solid frame of firm, grainy tannins. This powerful expression of Pauillac has only begun to show its full beauty. Drink now–2045.

James Suckling

The aromas to this are really amazing, with a potpourri of spices and dried flowers, as well as redcurrants, sweet plums and even some peaches. Full-bodied with layers of ripe fruit and ultra-fine tannins that spread across the palate in an encompassing yet always elegant and pure way. It’s succulent and unadulterated. Like crushed, perfectly ripened grapes. The length is rather endless. The tannins build. Fabulous young red. 35% in amphora and the rest in 50% new oak and 15% one-year oak. 65% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2028, but an absolute joy to taste now.

Cellar Selection. The wine is so perfumed, with ripe tannins set beside the black currant purity. The wine does have weight but the fruit is so refined and vibrant. Tannins give a core for aging, offering the structure and the density of a very fine wine. Organic and biodynamic.

The Iconoclast Was Right

“You’re going to ruin your family!”

When Pontet-Canet’s owner, Alfred Tesseron, decided to go fully biodynamic, his neighbors in Bordeaux clutched their pearls. How could this storied second-growth—revered by collectors as a peer of the First Growths—take the unnecessary risk of walking away from chemical herbicides and fungicides to join such a fad?

Almost 20 years later, wines like the 2019 Pontet-Canet show how prescient Tesseron was. His healthy vines weathered the hot and dry summer beautifully, and over a long harvest that ended October 10, delivered pristine fruit. The wine they yielded was a resounding success, with James Suckling calling it “Really amazing…succulent and unadulterated,” and “an absolute joy” in his 99-point review. Wine Enthusiast agreed, calling it “so perfumed…so refined and vibrant.”

We’re thrilled to bring this parcel to you direct from the cool cellars of the Château. Located on the Pauillac plateau directly across from First Growth giant Mouton Rothschild, perhaps Château Pontet-Canet always had the raw material for greatness. But not until it was purchased in 1975 by the Tesseron family did it start to fulfill its lofty potential. Now, this estate is one of the best arguments that the 1855 classification needs a healthy reshuffling.

It was the leadership of current proprietor Alfred Tesseron that has cemented its place in the pantheon of the best properties of Pauillac. “Throughout history farmers have been laboring, innovating, to get the most fruit possible from their land. All that interests me is what we need to do to get the best quality,” he told us, when we met with him at the estate.
