Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep garnet in the glass, with a luminous ruby rim. The wine opens with aromas of black cherry compote, dried fig, garrigue, cracked pepper, and hints of sandalwood and lavender. Full-bodied and densely layered, the palate weaves together ripe plum, roasted herbs, and licorice with a mineral backbone and fine, integrated tannins. A touch of smoked meat and cocoa linger on the long, savory finish. Bold yet balanced, with structure to age gracefully over the next decade plus. Drink now–2040.

Jeb Dunnuck

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Grand Vin offers more depth, with a darker core of fruit as well as complex notes of peppery garrigue, loamy earth, and incense. The balance here is spot on, it's medium to full-bodied, and has great tannins, all making for a brilliant Châteauneuf du Pape with tons to love. It shows the sunny style of the vintage as well but doesn't lose a beat with regards to elegance and finesse. Give bottles 3-4 years and it should have two decades of overall longevity.

Vinous

Saturated ruby. Expansive, smoke- and mineral-accented black raspberry, cherry cola, cassis, baking spice and succulent herb scents show outstanding detail and lift. Sweet and expansive in the mouth, offering vibrant red/blue fruit liqueur, candied lavender, spicecake and licorice flavors that stain the palate. Powerful yet impressively lively and focused on the extremely long, floral- and spice-driven finish, which is framed by steadily building tannins.

Wine Advocate

Hints of vanilla, menthol and cedar gently mark the nose of the 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Grand Vin, which saw about 20% new oak in its élevage. There's plenty of raspberry and black cherry to balance out the ledger in this balanced, age-worthy effort. It's full-bodied and labeled a full 1% higher in alcohol than its Saintes Pierres sibling, with a rich, ripe mouthfeel, ample concentration and a long, velvety finish that adds hints of salted licorice. Tasty stuff.

The Empire Expands

As Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate put it, the Guigal family is “the modern world’s greatest testament to a family-run winery with impeccably high standards, integrity and an uncompromising vision of the future.” In 2017, after minting over TWENTY 100-point wines from their stronghold in Côte-Rôtie, Philippe and father Marcel Guigal made a major splash by acquiring an ancient, 125-acre estate in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

It’s not hard to see why Philippe and Marcel finally pulled the trigger. The Nalys estate, which dates back four centuries to the 1600s, comprises three plots. By blending select parcels from the three vineyards, the Guigals knew they could produce a Southern Rhône red to rival their masterpieces from up north.

In the 2019, half the fruit hails from the iconic, galet-strewn La Crau, where their vines neighbor those of Henri Bonneau and La Janasse; the wines are famed for their massive structure and expressive fruit. The Nalys vineyard, packed with the red sandy clay soil known locally as saffres, furnishes freshness and silky texture, while the small stones and sand of Bois Sénéchal lend balance and precision.

The Guigals set to work immediately, replanting 12 acres of vines, instigating organic farming practices, and requiring crews to make multiple passes through the vineyards during harvest, picking by vine age, not plot. The 2019 is a testament to just how great this estate can be.

It’s impossible to imagine the Guigal family, now with their own outpost in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, doing anything other than elevating Château de Nalys to the absolute pinnacle of the region. And when they do—and the wines command commensurate prices—you’ll be glad you have this phenomenal 2019 in the cellar.
