Wine Access Tasting Note

Dark, ruby-black center with crimson-staining tears. The nose has immediate appeal, showing aromas of black fruit, black currants, blackberry, plum, and a little dried blueberry. There is a richness to the midpalate, which offers layers of crushed rocks, organic upturned earth, and vanilla. The very fine tannic structure gives the wine the ability to cellar for 15+ years, but this Cabernet has tons to offer right now. With raw chocolate, crushed forest leaves, and graphite lingering on a long finish, it’s just delicious. Drink now–2035.

James Suckling

Baked-blueberry, spiced-cherry, praline and vanilla aromas. Some gravel and pine undertones. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Creamy and supple with seamless fruit and hazelnut layers. Sleek and polished tannins. Try from 2022.

Beringer’s Back with a Blockbuster

Beringer’s Knights Valley Reserve Cabernet is ALWAYS one of our biggest crowd-pleasers, never failing to rack up a slew of five-star reviews from our members:

This bottle is just more proof of the qualitative tear that Beringer has been on since Mark Beringer, great-great-grandson of one of the founding brothers, came back to the family business. When he took the helm as winemaker in 2015, he immediately wrote himself into the winery’s legacy with his dazzlingly supple Cabernets.

It’s fitting that he was eager to work with Knights Valley grapes: Beringer was the pioneer and trendsetter in this northeastern tip of Sonoma, farming vineyards since the early 1960s, long before Peter Michael began making 99-point wines off the fruit from these bucolic, rolling hills.

Returning to the same vineyards that his family first cultivated generations ago, Mark showed his complete mastery of the style that has twice earned Beringer Wine of the Year honors from Wine Spectator.

Beringer’s Knights Valley vines see the warmest temperatures in Sonoma, but also experience dramatic temperature variations, which means refreshingly cool nights and long growing seasons. The vines take root in a diverse mix of well-drained soils, from rocky alluvial hillsides to volcanic ash, yielding grapes that produce a bold and richly structured Cabernet. A barrel selection from the best plots, polished in about 50% new French oak, the 2018 is one stunning bottle, all the way through the lifted, herbal finish.
