The Story

The 2024 Vinos Finos de California Sabroso Central Coast earned an absolutely stunning 96 points from Decanter, smack-dab in the ratings category with some of the top Bordeaux of the 2024 vintage. It’s worlds away from that experience, though: This is California quaffer, a beautifully bright wine whose weight lies somewhere in the sweet spot between Loire Cab Franc and Rhône Grenache. It’s at its best with a slight chill, a fantastic bottle for when you want a red with the vivacity of great rosé.

Vibrant ruby in the glass. This is a spirited blend bursting with energy and charm. Lush notes of black raspberry, wild cherry, and boysenberry glide across a palate laced with rose petal, lilac, and a streak of wet stone. Supple tannins and bright acidity create lift and focus, while the finish hums with savory depth and mineral tension. A lively, expressive red that delivers both freshness and finesse—perfectly suited for casual sipping or chilling slightly as a red-fruited alternative to rosé. Drink now–2029.

Decanter

The 2024 Sabroso Red is absolutely delicious, delivering fabulous dark berry fruit intensity laced with wet slate minerality. The fruit shows exceptional purity and mid-palate density, framed by supple tannins that build with impressive intensity on the finish. Pretty rose petal and lilac florals lift the nose, while a saline-acid brightness carries through to the finish, giving the wine verve and focus. This is a seriously crafted yet effortlessly drinkable wine. Minimal but effective sulphur, spontaneous fermentation, and careful ageing lend it both grip and energy. Compared to the already irresistible 2023 release, the 2024 vintage dials up the intensity while maintaining the wine’s core charm. A blend of 32% Grenache, 29% Cabernet Pfeffer, 23% Zinfandel, 12% Barbera, and 4% Ruché, it is rested in used French oak barrels, allowing the fruit to shine. Lively and approachable, it’s ideal for casual sipping or as a refreshing, red-fruited alternative to rosé. Hats off to winemaker Ted Glennon for pulling off such a unique blend, with such personality, structure, and deliciousness.

“#%^&ing Delicious!”

“#%^&ing delicious!” That’s how David Ramey originally described Ted Glennon’s Vinos Finos de California Sabroso to us at a party.  Obviously that kind of enthusiasm from a legendary winemaker is a great endorsement—but it’s since been dwarfed by stratospheric critical raves.

Vinos Finos de California is Glennon’s celebration of historic vineyards and an era when all California wines weren’t necessarily big bruising powerhouses. A native of Monterey, Ted is the sixth generation of his family in California, and the first to produce wine. Thanks to his long career in the industry, he’s got insider access to some of the Central Coast’s best under-the-radar vineyards.

Ted focuses on overlooked vineyards in the cool coastal mountains and valleys of the Monterey Bay region, and for his 2024 Sabroso, he leaned on four organically farmed sites. Three of them are own-rooted, a rarity in the US, where phylloxera spurred widespread grafting.

The backbone of the wine is 43% 1975-planted Grenache from well-drained, gravelly soils in Arroyo Seco. An original source for the legendary Ventana wines of the 1980s and 90s, this spot’s cool morning fog creates a long growing season. It’s perfect for physiologically mature grapes that don’t carry high finished ABVs—the exact kind of grapes that make this blend sing.

The Grenache is augmented with 21% own-rooted Zinfandel, partially from the Joullian Vineyard in Carmel Valley. Those grapes are joined by 36% own-rooted Cabernet Pfeffer, a French grape previously known as Mourtaou. This grape, which makes light, peppery, perfumed reds, is now extinct in France. The only plantings in the world are in San Benito County, and these grapes hail from vines planted in 1992.
