The Story

There’s nothing better than a special-occasion red priced like a weeknight drinker to pop on a whim. From a world-class Tuscan estate, Tua Rita’s 2023 Rosso dei Notri had us double-checking the pricing in disbelief. Wine Enthusiast called it a “truly outstanding deal,” which is an understatement: This Super Tuscan beauty from Maremma drinks like a $40 Bolgheri red for a fraction of the cost.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep ruby in the glass, with youthful violet edges. The aromas burst with wild blackberry, ripe cherry, and plum compote, accented by crushed herbs, anise, and a faint touch of cocoa. On the palate, it’s vibrant and juicy, with supple tannins framing flavors of dark berries, red currant, and baking spice. A subtle mineral edge and bright acidity give the wine lift and clarity, finishing with warmth and balance. This is a polished yet energetic Tuscan red that’s ready to enjoy now but structured enough to hold for a few years. Drink now–2032.

Lovely crushed berry and cherry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied with bright acidity and a crunchy and delicious finish. A blend of mostly merlot and cabernet sauvignon with some syrah and cabernet franc. Drink now.

Floral, earthy, fresh nose, with a precision of fruit and graphitic edge even as it offers that warmth and a mouthfeel that's luxurious—a handshake and a winning smile from a producer whose wines might seem intimidating. Truly outstanding deal.

A Special-Occasion Tuscan Priced for the Weeknight

If you think “luxury” when you hear the words Super Tuscan, you’re not alone. Boasting names like Sassicaia, Tignanello, Masseto, and Ornellaia, the category is defined by grandeur—which is why finding Super Tuscan values feels so good.

Tua Rita’s high-end bottles regularly fit in with those grand names—they were just the second-ever Italian winery to earn a 100-point score from Wine Advocate—but their Rosso dei Notri is a wine of a different stripe. It offers value that is near unparalleled in Tuscany.

Our members have noticed. The 2019 boasts a jaw-dropping 4.4-star rating from them—some of the hardest critics out there—and Wine Advocate said it “offers terrific value.”

Rosso dei Notri is made from their first pick on Tua Rita’s property. The 2023 is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Franc, aged primarily in stainless-steel tanks and older casks. Exotic, full of creamy red berries and notes of sottobosco (underbrush), the wine evokes its vineyard’s surroundings, a forested zone that served as a hunting destination for Tuscan nobles in the Middle Ages. Roast wild boar shoulder plugged with garlic and rosemary, anyone?

In 1984, Rita Tua and husband Virgilio Bisti entered into their project with a spirit of modesty which, luckily for us, is still reflected in the price tag. With an ambition that did not extend beyond farming, they bought a small parcel of land and planted it to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1992, they released their first wine, the Left Bank-inspired Giusto di Notri, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, and they haven’t looked back since, even when crafting humble but delicious wines like this 2019 Rosso dei Notri.
