The Story

Dan Petroski's Massican label is a member-favorite for its white-wine prowess. Walter Scott is the most coveted producer of whites in Oregon. So when we heard that Massican and Walter Scott had teamed up to produce a collaborative bottle, we were immediately on the phone with Dan to secure an allocation—only 130 cases were made—and the second the wine hit our glasses, we wished he'd been able to spare twice as much. Both wineries prioritize minerality and drive in their white wines, and this wine is a beautiful synthesis of their styles and talent.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Pale straw in color, the nose bursts with citrus zest, crisp pear, and white nectarine, accented by honeysuckle and wet river stones. The palate is fresh and electric, balancing juicy Meyer lemon and green apple with a creamy mid-palate and a lingering saline edge. Touches of almond skin and fennel frond emerge on the finish, adding complexity to its vibrant acidity and mineral backbone. Drink now–2030.

Walter Scott + Massican = Magic

Dan Petroski's Massican label is a member-favorite for its white-wine prowess. Walter Scott is the most coveted producer of whites in Oregon—whose wines are in such demand that we haven't secured a bottle since the '14 vintage.

So when we heard that Massican and Walter Scott had teamed up to produce a collaborative white wine, we were immediately on the phone with Dan to secure an allocation—only 130 cases were made—and the second the wine hit our glasses, we wished he'd been able to spare twice as much.

Dan was the longtime winemaker at legendary producer Larkmead—and a Chronicle Winemaker of the Year—but he never wanted to stress about selling Massican. So he always kept production "one step behind demand." But now, considering how Massican has risen in the estimation of wine lovers the world over, that whole "one step behind demand" thing is a stark understatement: There's just not enough to go around.

You'd better believe that some of the country's top restaurants are lining up for it: Massican and Walter Scott are poured at the likes of The French Laundry, The Restaurant at Meadowood, Bouchon, Saison, and more.

This bottling is a co-fermented blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris from the superlative Fir Crest Vineyard in the Willamette Valley's Yamhill-Carlton AVA. It's a remarkable site that's tucked into the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, and it features shallow soils and brisk evening breezes, making for tiny berries and intense flavors. The vines struggle and yields are low—owner and farmer Robert Moshier openly wonders how long he'll be able to go without replanting—but the grapes and wines they produce are remarkable.
