The Story

Nebbiolo is one of absolute favorite grapes for rosé: Its combination of strawberry and tropical fruit meeting electric acidity makes for pink wines that are thrilling. The grape’s found an unlikely home in Australia’s Adelaide Hills, where Longview makes one of the greatest Nebbiolo rosatos we’ve tried—from anywhere, including Italy.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Pale salmon with a touch of orange near the rim. Effusive aromas of quick-blended pineapple, orange, and apple, along with cut white strawberries, just-ripe banana, almond shortcake, and jasmine flowers. On the palate, zesty acidity with flavors of freshly-squeezed lemon, orange flower, and coconut; drink this in place of your summer piña colada. A long finish that makes us think of nothing but warm weather. Drink now - 2026.

Halliday Wine Companion

An impressive rosé, with plenty of spicy red berry fruits and no reliance on residual sugar for its grand 'Hello, sailor' entrance onto the palate. That there's very little room for rosés in the Top 100 (for which it was submitted) is not its fault.

A Finicky Grape’s Unlikely New Home

Longview embodies the try-anything, no-rules (just right) Aussie spirit that runs through our favorite wineries from Down Under.

Since the Italian-Australian Saturno family aren’t beholding to long traditions and strict appellation rules, they were free to honor their roots when planting their first vineyard in the late 90s, putting Barbera and Nebbiolo in the ground alongside Pinot Noir.

Their vineyard is located just outside the township of Macclesfield in the Adelaide Hills, sitting on slopes that bring Old World estates to mind. The family’s inaugural vintage was 2001, and in the two decades since they have earned significant awards and praise.

Since then, Nebbiolo has become a bit of a sensation across the wineries of the Adelaide Hills—one of the few places outside of Italy’s Piedmont that the finicky grape has found a proper home.

Every wine in the Longview range is raised on their estate vineyard, the red varieties on the northern slopes, where a favorable exposure leads them to ripen consistently. The high diurnal temperature shifts result in a beautiful breadth of flavor in the finished wines.

For their Juno Rosato, they take their Nebbiolo—along with 19% Pinot Noir—from hand-harvested grapes and press them directly after a light crushing. The goal is to extract just a touch of color and make sure that flavors and aromas stay elegant and bright. This would be great with shrimp on the barbie—we’re required by Aussie custom to say that, though it’s very true—or a Greek salad.
