The Story

We all know that every bottle of Williams Selyem Pinot Noir is fantastic—but one inimitable bottling represents the pinnacle of their lineup: their Rochioli Riverblock Pinot.  Rochioli Riverblock was Williams Selyem’s first single-vineyard Pinot. Originally made just a year after the winery’s founding, it’s as iconic as DeNiro doing “You talkin’ to me?” or Neil Young busting out Old Man on his battered D-45. The 2022 shows why collectors clamor for this wine every year. It’s full, concentrated, complex, and balanced—as good as California Pinot gets.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep ruby core with a bright edge. There are prominent aromas of ripe red fruit, such as cherry, raspberry, and strawberry, along with subtle hints of black plum. Additional layers of complexity include delicate floral notes of rose petal, as well as earthy undertones, a touch of forest floor, and blood orange peel. The fruit profile is rich, with flavors of ripe Morello cherry and pomegranate taking center stage. There is a delightful balance of fresh acidity and well-integrated tannins that lends a structured yet elegant mouthfeel. The wine leaves a clean, satisfying aftertaste with a hint of minerality and a subtle echo of oak. A Pinot that begs for smoked duck, braised mushrooms, or a simple charcuterie plate. Drink now–2035.

As Iconic as California Gets

In 1979, Burt Williams and Ed Selyem alchemized a few tons of grapes they had gotten for free into their first wine. Their first vintage under the Williams Selyem name came in 1984, and a year later they introduced the world to their very first single-vineyard Pinot, from the Rochioli Vineyard in Russian River Valley. That’s the wine that made history at the 1987 California State Fair.

That same year, demand skyrocketed, and brought them permanently into the world of “cult” wine—long before that term had even been used to describe the class of high-quality, never-enough-to-go-around bottles. So 1987 also marked the debut of the Williams Selyem waitlist, which gave Pinot lovers a reliable—but unbearably slow—way to score wines from Williams Selyem. A wait of two or three years is now customary.

There’s no question that these wines are built for the cellar. One of our old-time collector friends has a knack for getting in on the ground floor of some of California’s top wineries, and one of the greatest dinners of our lives came the night he tapped into his Williams Selyem collection.

That night, we tasted a dozen Williams Selyem Pinots dating from 2005 back to 1989, when the winery was a relative upstart. Every single wine was awash in gorgeous California red-berry fruit, and each one on our journey back through the years revealed a little more fruit complexity—and a little more disbelief that what was in our glasses wasn’t a perfectly cellared Burgundy of the highest order.
