The Story

Much of Ridge’s reputation is built upon their highly sought-after Zin blends—Vinous calls Ridge “the stalwart of distinctive, site-driven blends from across California”—and the 2022 Lytton Springs is doubtless one of the best blends they’ve ever made. This 50th anniversary bottling is “fabulous,” in the words of Vinous, which James Suckling called “the kingpin of Ridge’s Sonoma County heritage blends.” This is California red wine at its vibrant, intense, and age-worthy best, the rare Zinfandel-based red that collectors worldwide hold in the highest esteem.

Wine Access Tasting Note

A deep red ruby color in the glass. Aromas of abundant black cherry, plum, and lilac, accented by notes of cedar, tobacco, cocoa, and freshly cracked black pepper. The palate is a joy, showing a fleshy midpalate, spice rack, and kiss of acidity that teams with velvety tannins to carry a long-lasting finish. Drink now–2035.

Wine Enthusiast

The densely packed nose of this legendary old vine field blend of Zin, Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante gives aromas of crushed blackberry, purple flowers and rich earthy spices, while the palate brings black cherry, olive and licorice flavors in a framework of opulent tannin that will age effortlessly for more than a decade.

Wine Spectator

Like a beast that's been tamed, this red is genteel and polished on the outside but dark and fervent deep down, with expressive flavors of blackberry, briar patch, savory anise and pepper. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet. Drink now through 2035. 7,000 cases made.

Decanter

This bottling marks the 50th Lytton Springs from Ridge, and appropriately, the wine is beguiling and intense—pure Americana and emblematic of Ridge's commitment to the heritage varieties and vines in California. Lytton Springs is home to 100-plus-year-old Zinfandel vines interplanted with Petite Sirah and Carignane, among a few other varieties. This bottling has become a standard bearer for the notion of California Zinfandel: smoky clove spices, toasted cinnamon sticks, bramble fruits and spicy black plums. The palate shows intense concentration, red and black plums, black pepper, muddled mint leaves and an undertone of dried anise and thyme. Delicious and built to age.

James Suckling

This is the kingpin of Ridge’s Sonoma County heritage blends and it doesn’t disappoint. Equal parts fruity, spicy and savory on a full body braced by moderate tannins. Judicious oak spices like cedar and cigar box complement pure, ripe blackberries and raspberries and a dash of black pepper. Known to age well for decades. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

California Red Wine at Its Best

Much of Ridge’s reputation is built upon their highly sought-after Zin blends—Vinous calls Ridge “the stalwart of distinctive, site-driven blends from across California”—and this is doubtless one of the best blends they’ve ever made.

Grown on their historic Dry Creek Valley estate, the 2022 is exactly what makes Lytton Springs so iconic. The result is gorgeous purity, with the vibrant fruit of century-old vines dominating in youth, and the firm acid making for a brightly balanced Zinfandel blend that can age a decade or more.

Aging Zinfandel blends—something that’s rarely recommended, unless we’re talking about Ridge: Christie’s auction house called them “equally impressive in terms of structure, length, and age-ability” as the winery’s Bordeaux-style wines, and singled out the Lytton Springs site as “an exceptional piece of ground” that “consistently produce(s) wines that are cellar-worthy yet understated and sophisticated.”

The Lytton vineyards are located on the benchlands between Dry Creek and Alexander Valley, where foggy mornings burn off into warm and sunny afternoons, before the breezes pick up in the late evening. The older blocks (at Lytton East) are planted with intermixed Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Mataro (Mourvèdre), and Grenache, which  are co-fermented. Lytton West features more single-varietal blocks, which are fermented separately before being added to the final blend.

Ridge is the largest grower of organically certified grapes in Sonoma County, and in the cellar they rely on what they call “pre-industrial” winemaking techniques. They eschew commercial enzymes and nutrients in the cellar, and allow the wine to undergo natural malolactic fermentation while aging in American oak. They’re also one of the only wineries in the world to voluntarily label their wines with a comprehensive list of ingredients.
