The Story

Leeuwin Estate’s Art Series Chardonnay stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s great wines, including priceless Burgundies. It’s a true collectible from Down Under and a bottle that blossoms with age into liquid treasure, and the 2022 is an especially statuesque and profound edition. The Advocate declared it “one to collect.” Take that to heart.

Wine Access Tasting Note

A luminous straw-gold in the glass. The nose is intensely aromatic—grilled Meyer lemon, white nectarine, and crushed cashew are layered with struck flint, sea spray, and a whisper of jasmine. The palate delivers hallmark Leeuwin power and precision: ripe orchard fruits and golden peach are enfolded in a creamy, nougat-like texture, balanced by laser-cut acidity. Notes of yuzu zest, toasted brioche, and a hint of oyster shell lend savory depth and tension. The finish is long, seamless, and quietly luxurious. A wine of sculpted richness and serious longevity. Drink now–2040.

Wine Advocate

The 2022 season was warm and low-yielding, particularly for Chardonnay, and many of the wines produced in the region this season can be typified by their nuttiness and a distinct chamomile tea/white flower character. Here, the 2022 Art Series Chardonnay is showing both of those characters, neatly wedged into the authoritative profile of Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay. Today, for perhaps the first time ever in seeing these wines on release, I note that the oak is a key player in the drinking experience—as ever, seamlessly matched to the fruit and an important part of the wine's style and evident here today. There are toasted nuts, yellow fruits, exotic spices and an open fan of acidity/phenolics through the finish. This 2022 will prove to be a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays. It's one to collect, but for drinking in the short/immediate term, decanting is recommended. Sealed under screw cap.

Halliday Wine Companion

If you were sitting quietly in a corner, contemplating the vicissitudes of life, and a glass of this exceptional chardonnay came your way, well, all would be very well indeed. And you’d perk up. It’s a wine that tends to be scintillating in youth, driven by all manner of citrus flavours – lemon, pink grapefruit with a dash of lime but also a mille-feuille of leesy lusciousness, oak spices and a moreish savouriness. It seems powerful and explosive with its acidity, drive and energy yet manages to remain classy and complex.

Advocate: “One to Collect”

Scan a list of the top-scoring 2022s in the Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate and you’ll see 97-point names like Kistler’s Kistler Vineyard Chard ($225), Domaine Leflaive’s Chevalier-Montrachet ($2,200), and Coche-Dury’s Meursault Les Genevrières ($2,100).

But standing shoulder-to-shoulder with them is Leeuwin Estate’s 2022 Art Series Chardonnay, one of the world’s great wines. It’s a true collectible from Down Under and a bottle that blossoms with age into liquid treasure.

Located a stone’s throw from the Indian Ocean in one of the most remote wine regions in the world, Leeuwin Estate has been setting Australia’s white-wine standard for decades. To grasp its importance, consider that Decanter recently staged a retrospective tasting of three decades of this “true classic among Australian Chardonnays.”

Everything that Leeuwin does is geared toward maximizing quality. Yields are kept to a minimum so that small bunches retain tremendously concentrated fruit, and the care that Leeuwin applies to the grapes is in their motto: “Treat ‘em like eggs.” James Halliday, Australia’s leading critic, has called Leeuwin “a class act” that works “with the precision of a Swiss watch.”

In the 2022 vintage, that devotion to quality resulted in a historic Art Series Chardonnay: a 97-point classic that Wine Advocate called "a powerful and statuesque player in the wider footprint of Art Series Chardonnays.”

And it’s only poised to improve: Halliday once noted that older vintages of the Art Series can be “reminiscent of top Meursault.” Praise for Chardonnay doesn’t get any higher than that. This is your chance to claim one of the world’s iconic white wines, one that invites comparisons to the most celebrated and expensive bottles in the world.
