Ferraton Père & Fils’s 2022 Samorens Côtes du Rhône Blanc is the “perfect winter white,” according to Elizabeth Schneider of Wine For Normal People. “The wine has a rich body from the Grenache yet strong acidity from the Clairette,” she says. “The two are ideal partners: without the Clairette the Grenache would be too rich, but together they strike a balance that makes the wine soft yet refreshing. Serve this at little warmer (55˚F) and the wine will shine.”

Ferraton has “access to some of the best vineyards in the region,” according to Vinous, “and certainly get the most of them.” They do that through the winemaking of Michel Chapoutier, who, with 40+ 100-point scores to his name, is no less than a deity of Rhône winemaking.

Chapoutier was originally brought on as a farming consultant, then took on a more active role in the winery over the years, implementing vineyard practices to encourage soil health and abundant microflora. Native yeast fermentation takes place in the winery before the wine is aged in a mixture of mostly stainless steel and a small fraction of older oak barrels.

In the glass, the wine exhibits characteristics typical of Southern Rhône whites: fresh citrus and stone fruit notes backed by subtle herbal touches and a whisper of Mediterranean garrigue.
