The Story

When we think of elite California Pinot, we think of names like Sea Smoke, Rhys, Maybach, Marcassin, and Dragonette. Jeb Dunnuck has called the winery “world-class,” while Antonio Galloni of Vinous once dubbed them “one of the most fascinating wineries in the Central Coast.” Their 2022 Pinot Noir from the Radian Vineyard is another stunning flagship bottling from a vineyard so magnificent that the owners of Screaming Eagle purchased it in 2014.

Deep ruby core with a vibrant edge. The nose bursts with aromas of crushed black cherry, ripe blueberry compote, cola, blood orange zest, tea leaves, and a hint of sea salt. The palate is filled with flavors of Bing cherry, earthy undertones, dried mushrooms, and delicate purple flowers. It’s plush-textured and luxurious, offering layers of complexity. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, while the juicy acidity provides excellent balance. Drink now–2037.

Antonio Galloni

The 2022 Pinot Noir Radian Vineyard is powerful, deep and substantial. Dark toned fruit, spice, lavender, licorice and leather all build in the glass. Ample and expansive, with tremendous depth, the 2022 is super-expressive, not to mention a total delight to taste. This finishes with a huge explosion of fruit and aromatics.

I can't say enough good things about this set of wines from Dragonette. The team led by brothers John and Steve Dragonette and Winemaker Brandon Sparks-Gillis excels with just about everything. The 2022 Sauvignon Blancs show tremendous site character and textural depth. The Pinots were picked on the later side of the heat spike and are quite impressive. Moreover, they exalt the personalities of some of the finest sites in the Sta. Rita Hills to the maximum. Much the same is true with the Chardonnays, which are arguably the highlights this year. In my view, the most changed wines in recent years are the red Rhônes, which are less bombastic than they once were. All the focus is on the vineyards. The Pinots are done with modest stem inclusion and see 15-16 months in barrel. Chardonnays are barrel fermented and aged for 18 months with no lees stirring. Primary and secondary fermentations are all native. From top to bottom, Dragonette is one of the most consistent and impressive wineries in Santa Barbara. These wines are simply tremendous.

Dragonette is quite possibly our favorite California Pinot Noir. It’s the one that we share with friends and family on special occasions, and we would put it up there with icons like Sea Smoke, Rhys, and RAEN, and Radio-Coteau.

We’re certainly not alone. Jeb Dunnuck has called Dragonette “world-class,” while Antonio Galloni of Vinous once dubbed them “one of the most fascinating wineries in the Central Coast.”

Dragonette’s 2022 Pinot Noir from the Radian Vineyard is another stunning bottling from one of their signature sites—a vineyard so magnificent that the owners of Screaming Eagle purchased it in 2014. Aromatic, lush, and luxurious, the wine boasts a 95-point score from Antonio Galloni at Vinous. Put simply, this is a wine of triple-digit-price quality.

Dragonette continues to work with six distinct vineyard blocks at the Radian Vineyard, which sits on the former Rancho Salsipuedes site (loosely translated to "get out while you can”). Radian is a challenging, cold, windy site, where vines dig into crushed white rocks—ancient diatomaceous soils that contain large chunks as light as feathers.

The plants struggle in these conditions, producing tiny clusters of small berries that yield a concentrated but perfectly fresh wine with a racy brightness. Grown in the gorgeous 2021 vintage, this is take-your-breath-away Pinot Noir that belongs in the conversation with the best of California.

When we started offering Dragonette, the winery was a well-kept secret. Demand goes up every year, and we’re always grateful to owners John and Steve Dragonette and Brandon Sparks-Gillis for every allocation we can share with you.
