Wine Access Tasting Note

A deep and concentrated dark ruby core. Fresh and crystalline on the nose, imbued with deep red cherry fruit, crushed raspberry, fir duff, and graphite. On the palate, the wine is taut and linear, with high acidity and more cherry and creamy berry compote flavors with a touch of vanillin. A classic Dundee Hills Pinot from 51-year-old vines of Pommard-clone Pinot Noir. Give this wine five or 10 years in the cellar to truly see its potential. Drink 2025–2035.

Decanter

The Maresh is a combination of 1970 and 1974 planted vines. Mouthfuls of complexity and elegance. High-toned red fruits and forest-driven umami character, pine bough, blood orange and spice. Long hang times for 2022, the low alcohol is evocative of Old World Pinot Noir. There is a darkness and complexity of the wine, with an intensity of flavour, only 5% new oak, 20 months in barrel. Spiced cinnamon, fresh red strawberries, savoury clove and smoked sea salt, bring an intensity, and a crushed stone minerality finishes this beautiful wine. Silken elegance and intensity combine in a gorgeous wine.

Wine Advocate

The 2022 Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard comes from vines planted in 1974 and was vinified and matured without new wood. It has a deep well of aromas that unfold slowly with each return to the glass: raspberry, strawberry and bitter orange give way to rosewater, rooibos tea leaves, forest floor and salumi. The palate is charming and effortless, balancing concentrated layers of perfumed fruit on a slender frame of silky tannins, and its vivacious energy and hauntingly long finish call you back to the glass again and again. While the 2021 Maresh Vineyard is chiseled and needs cellaring, this 2022 is already approachable.

James Suckling

Very subtle on the nose with forest berries, tea leaves, Morello cherries, wild herbs and some warm spices. Medium-bodied, yet it’s big on the palate. Suave and velvety, with an intense beauty on the mid-palate. Delicate, gentle texture all in harmony, yet it’s vibrant, energetic and very focused. The finish is agile and lively, with so much focus and length. It's authentic, well-crafted and long. Drink or hold.

You Won’t Find More Coveted Dirt in Oregon

When it comes to the very best American Pinot Noir, Oregon is the dollar-for-dollar champion.

Unlike our backyard of Sonoma, where top bottlings push $150 and even $200, it's still possible to get world-class Willamette Valley Pinot that slays Grand Cru Burgundy for two-digit prices.

And within Oregon's pantheon of top wines, there's nowhere we'd rather spend our money than on Arterberry Maresh's 2022 Maresh Vineyard Pinot. It hails from some of the oldest Pinot vines in the state: Jim Maresh's sacred Maresh Vineyard on Worden Hill Road—the Rodeo Drive of the Willamette's Dundee Hills.

Driving up Worden Hill Road, the Mareshes' big red barn is impossible to miss. Back in 1969, farmer Jim Maresh Sr. imported Pommard and Wadenswil Pinot Noir clones from California. He planted them in the spring of 1970, with the help of his neighbor Dick Erath, and those deep-rooted, dry-farmed vines are still producing world-class fruit today. This bottle is proof.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate declared, "The [Arterberry Maresh] wines are concentrated yet elegant, fruity yet flinty and are some of the most impressive wines we've tried anywhere—not just in the US." They raved, "Pinot Noirs from Arterberry Maresh offer amazing layers of sweet, precise fruits, exotic spices and earth—everything you want from great Pinot Noir.”

Decanter declared that the 2022 Pinots "show an outstanding confidence across the Valley's appellations. The cool and prolonged growing season has helped create wines with tremendous freshness that are balanced with ample concentration." We can't point to a better value in collectible Pinot Noir in the world right now, and a case will deliver well over a decade of thrilling drinking.
