The Story

During her time as Wine Director at San Francisco’s Coquetta restaurant, our VP of Wine, Advanced Sommelier Laura Koffer, never took Suertes del Marques’ 7 Fuentes off the by-the-glass list—and it was an easy decision: “It’s distinctive, soulful, and utterly compelling,” she told us. They farm land on Tenerife, the most important of Spain’s Canary Islands, where wind whips off the Atlantic at all hours of the day. The Listán Negro vines struggle to find purchase in the fractured volcanic soils of their slopes, as their roots sink deep into the earth hunting for water that rarely falls from the sky. The wines they make are as lyrical and nuanced as the island is inhospitable—this is a beautiful wine for lovers of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Luminous ruby with a translucent core, the nose is alive with wild red berries, dried rose petals, and crushed black pepper, underpinned by smoky volcanic ash and hints of dried herbs. On the palate, tangy cherry and pomegranate weave through fine, chalky tannins, while a mineral-driven spine keeps the wine fresh and vibrant. Delicate yet structured, it lingers with notes of blood orange, earth, and salinity, evoking the rugged Atlantic coastline. Drink now–2030

Wine Advocate

The 2021 7 Fuentes was quite similar to the 2020 that I tasted next to it, but this year they merged the 7 Fuentes and 7 Fuentes El Lance into a single cuvée of Listán Negro and 5% Castellana Negra, so it has grapes from more vineyards, 30 different ones. It fermented with 20% full clusters in concrete with indigenous yeasts and matured for 11 months, 50% in concrete and 50% in used 500-liter oak barrels; then it was blended and kept in stainless steel for a further eight months. It has 12.63% alcohol and good acidity and freshness. This is quite approachable and less reductive and at the same time fresher. They have been working to increase the pH of the soil to get less reduction in the wines; each year as the soils are healthier, there is less reduction in the wines.

As Lyrical and Nuanced as the Island is Inhospitable

Suertes del Marques farms land on Tenerife, the most important of Spain’s Canary Islands, where wind whips off the Atlantic at all hours of the day. The Listán Negro vines struggle to find purchase in the fractured volcanic soils of their slopes, as their roots sink deep into the earth hunting for water that rarely falls from the sky.

Grown at over 1,800 feet above sea level on vines up to 150 years old, the Medianías comes from the Orotava Valley on Tenerife. Volcanic soils abound here, and the vines have to be trained in an unconventional braided cordon, so that they can be easily moved out of the way during the spring and early summer season to make room for other crops. They look like no other vineyard you’ve ever seen, and they’re all own-rooted, as phylloxera has never come to these isolated islands.

Suertes del Marques makes wines that are as lyrical and nuanced as the island is inhospitable. A good friend—who happens to be a Master Sommelier—also loves these bottles:

“Every so often you come across a grape that reminds you of so many other wines that you love, but is unique unto itself,” he declared.

He went on to compare Suertes del Marques wines as having “clarity reminiscent of Burgundy, a peppery meatiness of Côte-Rôtie, a fine-grained tannin profile of an elegant Barbaresco, and a fresh liveliness of great Cru Beaujolais — yet it has its own soul. These wines and this place on the Earth show great potential as the next undiscovered wine, from a far off place.”
