The Story

Alta Vista Vineyard is an awe-inspiring site matched only by the wine it produces. Its terraced, dry-farmed, 50-year-old vines sit at one of the region’s highest elevations, rooted deep in volcanic soils. And from them, Far Mountain’s 2021 Fission is a powerful, refined, and well-structured Cabernet—“a gorgeous wine,” said Antonio Galloni of Vinous, with “tons of complexity from the very first taste.”

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep, inky purple core. The nose is bold and expressive, offering layers of blackcurrant, blueberry, and dark cherry wrapped graphite, crushed rock, and violets. Hints of cocoa, cedar, and fresh tobacco leaf emerge as the wine opens. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, with rich black fruit and firm, polished tannins. The structure is solid, with vibrant acidity adding lift and energy. Savory undertones of bay leaf, dried herbs, and earthy minerality enhance the wine’s complexity. The long, balanced finish reveals traces of dark chocolate, spice, and lingering fruit. Drink now–2040.

James Suckling

Lovely fresh thyme, currant and lead pencil. Black berry. Black olive. Pine cone and pine needles. Bay leaf. Medium to full body, with round and firm tannins and not too dry. There is real freshness and depth here. Iron underneath.

Vinous

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Fission is a gorgeous wine from Mai Errazuriz and Rodrigo Soto. Ample and deep, the 2021 possesses tons of complexity from the very first taste. Brambly overtones meld into leather, cedar, tobacco and dried herbs. Brooding tannins wrap it all together. The Fission emerges from dry-farmed vines planted on St. George rootstock at Alta Vista Gold Ranch on Moon Mountain. The old-vine field selection is believed to include some Cabernet Franc.

A Site that Demands Respect

Far Mountain named Vinous "Emerging Producer of the Year" (PDF attached in tech sheet area.

Unique Terroir: Moon Mountain District is located in Sonoma County, where the vineyards are planted on steep, rocky slopes at high elevations. This rugged terrain, combined with volcanic soils, imparts a distinctive minerality and intensity to the wines. The altitude also helps produce cooler temperatures, which preserve the wine's acidity and freshness, giving it a balanced and vibrant character.

Concentration and Power: Thanks to the region's harsh conditions and limited water availability, the vines struggle, resulting in lower yields but more concentrated fruit. This leads to a wine with bold flavors, deep complexity, and great aging potential, while still maintaining elegance and structure.

Winemaking Philosophy: Far Mountain focuses on minimal intervention and expressing the purity of the fruit. The Fission Cabernet Sauvignon showcases a sophisticated balance between fruit richness, earthy undertones, and polished tannins, which reflect both the terroir and careful winemaking approach.

Balanced Structure: The combination of bright acidity and firm tannins, paired with intense fruit flavors, makes this wine stand out. It has the power of a Napa Valley Cabernet but with a distinct Sonoma edge, marked by freshness and elegance, making it age-worthy yet approachable.
