The Story

Domaine Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s legendary producers—owners of the entirety of Clos de Tart, a monopole Grand Cru in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis. Now it’s one of the crown jewels of the Pinault family’s Artémis Domaines—which also manages Château Latour—and Clos de Tart’s wines have never been better.   In the classically styled 2021 vintage, they produced a wine that’s the essence of Clos de Tart, which combines the silkiness and aromatic fireworks of the Grand Crus Clos de Lambrays, which sits on one side, with the iron-fist-in-a-velvet-glove of Bonnes Mares on the other side. It’s one of Burgundy’s best wines and a bottle that others are judged against.

Wine Access Tasting Note

A captivating expression of its legendary vineyard, this wine radiates elegance and depth. In the glass, it reveals a deep, shimmering ruby hue, with a nose that unfolds in layers—wild raspberry, black cherry, and red currant meld with ethereal hints of rose petal, damp forest floor, and exotic spice. On the palate, it’s profoundly structured yet graceful, offering plush flavors of dark plum, cranberry, and pomegranate, underscored by subtle touches of clove, cocoa, and crushed stones. Fine-grained tannins and a vibrant acidity lend balance and poise, while a touch of graphite and savory herbs carries through to a remarkably long and intricate finish. Drink now–2040.

A Crown Jewel of Burgundy

Domaine Clos de Tart is one of Burgundy’s legendary producers—owners of the entirety of Clos de Tart, a monopole Grand Cru in the heart of Morey-Saint-Denis.

Founded in 1141 by the Bernardine sisters of the Abbey of Tart, this historic estate in Morey-Saint-Denis has maintained an unwavering commitment to excellence through nearly nine centuries of winemaking. The vineyard has been so prized that, through the centuries, it’s only had four owners.

The estate has been on a roll since Artémis took over management in 2018—the cellar has been modernized, allowing for vinification of smaller parcels within the vineyard, and the winemaking team has refined their use of both stems and new wood in vinification. The 2021 was treated to 53% whole-bunches during fermentation, imparting a firm structure for long aging under its seductive fruit. It’s then given a polish with 64% new oak to give a final gleam.

We’re lucky to get just a handful of bottles, which will be a highlight in the cellar of any Burgundy collector.
