The Story

Despite the huge splash they made two decades ago, when Robert Parker awarded them his second-ever 100-point score for an Italian wine, Tua Rita stays out of the spotlight. It’s a miracle, considering that this Cabernet-dominant Giusto di Notri blend is one of the most masterful examples we’ve tasted in the last few years. Critic James Suckling agreed, adding the 97-pointer to his list of Italy’s Top 100 Wines.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Medium dark-ruby color. A mix of savory and sweet on the nose, with black cherry, dried sandalwood, licorice, tobacco, and smoke. Full-bodied on the palate, packed with raspberry, Italian herbs, lavender, and cast iron. The red fruit continues on the finish, shifting toward dried cranberry seasoned with holiday spice. A triumphant showing that will only get better with a few more years in bottle. Drink now–2040.

James Suckling

Lots of incense to the aromas with sandalwood and lavender. Currants, blackberries. and fresh herbs, too. Full-bodied and very rich, with a powerful, structured mid-palate and a long, long finish. A wine for the future. Needs four to five years to soften. Try after 2026.

The Wine Independent

This Tua Rita, Giusto di Notri, Toscana IGT 2019 is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. The 2019 has a deep, youthful color and lots of sweet spice with hints of coffee and vanilla at first on the nose. This wine is very young but beautifully balanced, smooth and medium to full bodied with a lovely concentration but no heaviness. It has that weightless quality of very fine wines with superfine textured tannins and youthful cream and cassis flavors. The flavors are bright, poised and clearly delineated and set in a luxurious texture but with a fresh, elegant finish. Everything is beautifully integrated and harmonious in this wine, despite the fact that this is very young. Delicious now but would repay waiting a year or two.

Wine Advocate

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot, the 2020 Giusto di Notri is a ripe, bold and generous wine. The DNA of the wine has changed slightly over the years to favor the Cabernet Franc (with an increased percentage) over the Merlot, which has fallen from a previous high of about 35% to 40% of the blend a decade ago. What I like about this wine is that it manages an elegant, almost understated interpretation of a hot and dry vintage. The tannins are especially well managed in this situation. In 2020, Tua Rita's harvest was finished by October 6th.

Best-in-Class, Top-100 Cabernet Blend from Suvereto

Despite the huge splash they made two decades ago, when Robert Parker awarded them his second-ever 100-point score for an Italian wine, Tua Rita stays out of the spotlight. That’s a miracle, considering that their Cabernet-dominant Giusto di Notri blend is one of the most masterful examples we’ve tasted in the last few years. Critic James Suckling agreed, adding this 97-pointer—tying Sassicaia—to his list of Italy’s Top 100 Wines.

When traveling there, it’s easy to miss the Tua Rita winery, which lies off the dusty, unpaved Località Notri, tucked within the labyrinthine, stone-lined walls of Suvereto—about a 35-minute drive south from Bolgheri. In 1984, Rita Tua and husband, Virgilio Bisti, entered into their project with a spirit of modesty that is belied by their current reputation. Initially, they only planned to be farmers, so they bought 37.5 acres of land and planted it to Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

However, they eventually found their way to the wine business, and in 1992, they released their first effort, the Left Bank–inspired Giusto di Notri, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The early vintages of this wine gave off the same character as the 2020 release: rich, sun-kissed opulence, streaked with a trademark iron-like minerality that evokes the vineyard’s silt-and-clay soils carried down from the metalliferous hills of the Val di Cornia.

Giusto di Notri is truly a best-in-class wine whose rewards will only become greater with time. For the connoisseur determined to tune out the trends and hype, this is as close to a sure thing as it gets: full-bodied, classic Tuscan nobility.
