The Story

This 2020 release is just our fourth-ever allocation of Castello di Bossi’s elite Gran Selezione, which blends only the best estate fruit of the outstanding vintage—one that Vinous hailed for its “rich, sumptuous wines.” Each previous edition has been a smash hit, with last year’s recording a 4.4-star member-rating that put it in the company of some $75 Brunellos.

Wine Advocate

Made with 100% organic Sangiovese, the Castello di Bossi 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castelnuovo Berardenga is silky and fine. Although the overall fruit delivery certainly entails a good amount of power and concentration, the wine actually feels elegantly subtle on the palate. The fruit is nicely ripe, showing lots of cherry and dark plum, and the integrated tannins add firmness. Aging in large oak casks is in line with local tradition, and arguably what sets Castello di Bossi apart is the soil composition found here, with a mix of clay and tufo rock.

James Suckling

A juicy and salty red with plums and cedar with light sawdust and hints of dried meat. Medium to full body. Savory. Nice tension at the end. Some chocolate powder. Drink now or hold.

“What Sets Castello di Bossi Apart Is the Soil”

Castello di Bossi’s 2020 Gran Selezione boasts glowing praise and 94-point scores from both Wine Advocate and James Suckling, with the former praising its powerful intensity matched to “silky and fine” texture. It’s an ageworthy bottle that’s already delicious, and our case price makes it something you can afford to pour with pollo al mattone for the next decade.

The terroir of the southerly Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone—renowned for turning out richly concentrated masterpieces―combined with a fantastic growing season to supply this 2020 with the makings of legend.

“What sets Castello di Bossi apart is the soil composition found here,” noted Wine Advocate, and their vineyards produced a bottle that’s both immediately delicious and built for the cellar. Nuanced blackberry, black cherry, and spice-box tones are anchored by the gentle grip of a refined framework of tannins.

“In my estimation, Marco Bacci’s Castello di Bossi delivers one of the absolute best expressions of Chianti Classico from the Castelnuovo Berardenga,” declared the Wine Advocate. The Baccis acquired the 14th-century estate in 1980 and hired superstar enologist Alberto Antonini, who favors a non-interventionist approach.

Thanks to his efforts, Castello di Bossi has been able to produce critically acclaimed hits like this Gran Selezione, which shows the kind of harmony and sophistication that typically require a decade to achieve. The warm growing season penetrated deeply into the rolling green hills of the 1,260-acre estate, and the cool nights in Bossi’s high-altitude vineyards helped rein in the quickly developing ripeness in the grapes, preserving acidity and balance.
