The Story

It’s hard to put a price on ungrafted vines. Wineries privileged enough to work with low-yielding, ungrafted vineyards tend to charge a pretty penny for those bottlings. Yet Dr. Hermann’s stellar Erdener Treppchen Kabinett #6—made entirely from ungrafted plants in the steep, “class one” section of this iconic Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) of the Middle Mosel—represents a stellar value.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Pale yellow-straw with silver reflections at the rim. The nose has an immediate impact of white peach, Bosc pear, jasmine, crushed rock, and salted lime. The palate is vibrant and crunchy with soft notes of wildflower honey and a kiss of apricot toward the finish. The acid-ripeness balance is gorgeous, leaning a little toward off-dry to match the produce and cheeses. A Mosel Kabinett with the perfect amount of age. Drink now–2030.

Vinous

As in past years, Hermann’s #6 originates with old, ungrafted vines, relatively rare in the Treppchen, and, unsurprisingly, this year’s rendition reflects picking on the first day of Hermann’s harvest – namely, September 24. A penetrating, cooling nose offers site-typical mint and sassafras along with intimations of white peach and lime. Subtle smokiness and crushed stone suffusion add interest to a luscious, buoyant and glossy midpalate and an impressively persistent finish. (I wrote simply “#6” as part of this wine’s description because the label displays a prominent Arabic number six, although the wine in fact also carries the A.P. #6. There is once again a second Treppchen Kabinett from younger vines in a less privileged location, a wine of which, as usual, Hermann did not offer me a taste.)

Wine Advocate

The 2018 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett –6– is clear and intense on the generously ripe and aromatic nose. The palate is lush and round, a mouthful of wine, but again, like a Spätlese rather than a Kabinett. The finish is pure, crunchy and slatey, pretty vital and vibrantly fresh, with good grip and tension. This Treppchen already drinks very well but has the potential to surprise. Tasted in March 2019.

Ungrafted Vines Make Magic

It’s hard to put a price on ungrafted vines.

Old-timers across Europe still complain that modern vineyards, with their American rootstocks supporting vinifera grapes, don’t have that je ne sais quoi of wines from the last century.

So any wineries privileged enough to work with low-yielding, ungrafted vineyards tend to charge a pretty penny—iconic wines like Cappellano’s Pie Franco or Plouzeau’s Ante Phylloxera are significantly more expensive than the rest of their lineups.

Yet Dr. Hermann’s stellar Erdener Treppchen Kabinett #6—made entirely from ungrafted plants in the steep, “class one” section of this iconic Grand Cru (Grosse Lage) of the Middle Mosel—represents a stellar value.

It’s made by talented winemaker Christian Hermann, whose Riesling qualifications are not just inherited: Before taking charge of his family’s operation, he spent time working with the most renowned names in the region: Dr. Loosen, J.J. Prum, and even cult producer Willi Schaefer.

We’ve even secured a tiny quantity of the perfectly-aged 2018, which is absolutely on fire after a half-decade in the cellar. Pour this beautiful, gently sweet bottle with a soft cheese or a salad and marvel at the way that it packs so much crushed rock and salty lime flavor into a frame of barely-sweet apricots and pears.

The Erdener Treppchen (the staircase or podium of Erden) is one of the great sites in Germany, ranked as a Grosse Lage (aka Grand Cru) by the prestigious growers organization, the VDP. Just above the legendary Prälat—named for the archbishop of Trier—and next to the famed Urziger Würzgarten, it trades its neighbors crumbly red-slate for treacherous soils of blue Devonian slate and the intense stone-fruit and lime dialectic that comes with it.
