The Story

Château Le Boscq, which sits next to Third Growth Calon-Ségur and close to Meyney and Montrose, has long been a sleeping giant of Saint-Estèphe. The château was recently promoted to one of just 14 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels in all of Bordeaux—an honor that neatly coincided with the release of this 2018, which is a triumph. Decanter praised its “brilliant purity” in their 95-point review.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep ruby in appearance, with lively purple streaks throughout. Dense aromas of fresh vanilla, ripe plums, Mission figs, blueberries, cinnamon, and violets. Ripe, grippy tannins and fresh acidity marry beautifully on the palate with flavors of smoked thyme, fresh red flowers, cocoa beans, strawberries, candied bacon, and black raspberries. A lingering, luxurious finish begs to be paired with a T-bone steak, quinoa salad, or smoked gouda. Drink now–2035.

(Panel Tasting) Le Boscq lies minutes from the Gironde estuary, 18ha of vines on a deep gravel bank with clay subsoils. The château first obtained cru bourgeois status in 1932 when the classification began, then in 2020 was promoted to exceptionnel. The 2018 wine is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot and 4% Petit Verdot. Individual plots were fermented in small stainless steel vats, then the wine spent 12 months ageing in oak barriques, of which 45% were new.

Georgina Hindle: Smooth and full of energy, a touch of sweetness to the red, blue and black fruits and lashings of dark chocolate, liquorice and slate. Brilliant purity of expression and definition.

Vincenzo Arnese: Blackcurrant, figs and charred wood, the palate riper with a sweeter feeling: crisp tannins, intense and very oaky, and notes of nutmeg and vanilla.

Daphne Teremetz: Blackcurrant cordial fruit and some cedar and light nutty complexity on the nose. Full, bold body with super-fine, tight tannins – moderately smooth, soft acidity and a ripe blueberry finish.

Château Le Boscq’s Moment in the Sun

The 95-point 2018 represents a bit of an apotheosis moment for Château Le Boscq. Although the well-situated estate has been around since the 18th century—it was originally built for Thomas Barton of Second Growth Léoville-Barton fame—its ascent into Saint-Estèphe’s elite didn’t begin until 1995.

That's when Maison Dourthe took over. They replaced the old, dirty wood fermenters with temperature-controlled stainless steel, and poured money into the vineyards and cellar. After all, they saw massive amounts of untapped potential, since Le Boscq sits next to Third Growth Calon-Ségur and not far from Meyney and Montrose.

Each year, the bottles got a little better, thanks to improvements like plot-by-plot vinification, more new wood to handle the increased concentration, and the help of legendary consultant Michel Rolland. In fact, the château was promoted to one of just 14 Crus Bourgeois Exceptionnels in all of Bordeaux, an honor that coincided neatly with the release of this triumphant 2018, whose “brilliant purity” Decanter praised their 95-point review.

2018 was one of the hottest vintages ever recorded in Bordeaux, with a dry summer and warm start to fall—so the ability of Le Boscq to harvest and vinify each section of their vineyard separately helped them avoid excessive hydric stress. Rolland and the team made use of their high-tech optical and densimetric sorting machines to select only the prime berries, and ended up with a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and 4% Petit Verdot after a strict barrel-by-barrel selection.

The result is stunning—a true liftoff moment for an estate on the rise.
