The Story

Founded in 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils is Burgundy royalty, and their 2018 Pommard showcases why this historic producer remains at the pinnacle of the region. We secured a precious allocation of this increasingly rare village-level gem, which perfectly captures Pommard's signature power, structure, and airworthiness —from a fantastic vintage, to boot.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep, ruby core, with flashes of garnet at the edges. The nose is generous, offering a vibrant mix of ripe red fruits—wild cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry—interlaced with dried rose petals, orange peel, and violets. As it opens, earthy aromas of forest floor, wet stone, and a subtle cola emerge, complemented by a touch of leather. The wine is structured yet elegant, with firm, fine-grained tannins. Flavors of red cherry tart and fresh plum are layered with savory notes of dried herbs, clove, and a hint of black truffle. The minerality is pronounced, grounding the wine with a stony quality that is quintessential to Pommard. The finish is long and persistent, leaving behind echoes of red fruit, spice, and earth. Drink now–2035.

Bouchard Reigns

With a winemaking legacy dating back to 1731, Bouchard Père & Fils stands as one of Burgundy's most historic and respected négociant houses. Bar none.

We were thrilled to get our hands on the 2018 Pommard because it’s extremely hard to secure Burgundy like this for the Connoisseur Club. Bouchard’s village-level Pommards are increasingly scarce in the US market, as more and more of their production is directed to Europe and Asia. This 2018 represents an exceptional opportunity to experience one of Burgundy's most classic appellations from one of its most storied producers. It’s a perfect introduction to Pommard, which produces some of the Côte de Beaune's most structured and ageworthy reds, as well as to one of Burgundy’s most celebrated producers.

Bouchard's extensive holdings in Pommard include plots in several Premier Cru sites, but their village-level bottling draws from carefully selected grower-partners throughout the appellation. The warm 2018 vintage provided perfect ripening conditions, allowing winemaker Frédéric Weber to craft a wine that perfectly balances Pommard's natural muscle with the vintage's generous fruit. Pommard is known for its power and presence, and this bottle carries that torch proudly.

The result is captivating. The wine shows a deep ruby color, with an expressive nose of black cherries, earth, and subtle spice. On the palate, it displays Pommard's characteristic firm structure, but the 2018 vintage brings an additional layer of ripe fruit that makes this wine surprisingly approachable in its youth while maintaining excellent aging potential.

This is a bottle to savor with friends and family, whether in the near term or over the next decade or so. A fantastic Burgundy from an excellent vintage, we’re happy to share it with you.
