The Story

When it was $26, Poggio del Moro’s Super Tuscan got our attention by holding its own against reds ten times the price. We’ve now snared an allocation of the 2016, which boasts the same 93-point praise but is even less expensive. It’ll certainly be tough to beat as far as Super Tuscan deals go.

A deep ruby core in the glass. Aromas of crushed cherries and fresh plums preview a palate of dried cherries, currants, tilled earth, and savory herbs. A cleansing mineral note runs throughout, along with a hint of balsamic. Fresh, forward, and approachable right out of the gate, it's a harmonious and elegant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Merlot. Drink now–2030.

James Suckling

Lots of notes of walnuts, baking spices, cedar and tobacco with ripe black cherries and currants. Some chocolate, too. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins and a succulent fruit character. Rich and energetic with a backbone of spiced dark fruit and a racy finish. Drink or hold.

A Magical Night in Cobblestoned Florence

The room was full of collectors who thought nothing of uncorking a 1990 Ornellaia on a weeknight. Yet they were fully captivated by the  Poggio del Moro Rosso Toscana.

Showing exquisite structure and charisma plus tons of complexity and power, it reminded us of bottles from Tuscan luminaries like Viticcio, Il Borro, and Romitorio—which usually start at $40 or $50 and ring up from there. That’s why we brought del Moro’s thrilling blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese to US soil.

With a 93-point plug from James Suckling, that first vintage sold out fast. Now, we’ve nabbed the 2016—which sports the same 93-point praise—at an even lower price.

Lately, we’ve found ourselves drifting through memory palaces of our favorite trips. There’s one we keep revisiting: a magical tasting in Florence’s cobblestoned Centro Storico, where we discovered the immensely charming Poggio del Moro Rosso.

On a table lit by flickering flames, plated with rustic flatbreads, and lined with gleaming Zalto glasses were Super Tuscans that would have an auctioneer salivating: 1997 Solaia, 1990 Ornellaia, 2004 Masseto. But a paper-bagged curveball stood in the midst of that imposing lineup.

Even in that august company, the mystery bottle unified the room with its mass appeal and instant charisma. When it was uncovered, we were astounded to discover that it was the Poggio del Moro, which held its own with wines that went for ten times as much. Before the night was over, we’d already set the gears turning to snare us an allocation.

We look forward to reliving that night with our Florentine friends, and we hope this bottle will bring you some of that same magic we felt.
