The Story

About 170 years ago, Spanish workers planted Tempranillo vines in the loose, sandy alluvial soil near an extreme bend in the Ebro River—a place called Banos de Ebro. For going on two centuries, those soils have protected these now gnarled super-centenarian vines from the ravages of phylloxera, and today those vines are still producing a tiny amount of marvelous Rioja—less than 500 cases, in most vintages.  We were extremely fortunate to secure a small share of this superb Rioja, which now, with nearly a decade of bottle age, is in a gorgeous state of liveliness. We’ve got bottles for a price that just shouldn’t be possible, given this wine’s pedigree and performance with the critics.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Medium garnet hue with flashes of pale ruby at the rim. The nose is richly layered, offering a composition of ripe blackberries, dried cherries, and blackcurrant, intertwined with savory notes of tobacco, rosemary, leather, and earthy truffle. Subtle and refined oak notes of spice and vanilla complement the earthy nose. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, with perfectly integrated tannins supporting flavors of dark plum, cassis, and cocoa, enhanced by a touch of balsamic and dried fig. The wine's freshness and minerality balance its richness, while a long, graceful finish reveals lingering notes of cedar, spice, and crushed stone. It is in its prime now but has years ahead of it. Drink now–2034.

This inky, garnet-colored wine has a bouquet of cherry, milk chocolate and orange zest. Opulent tannins coat the palate, wrapped around flavors of black cherry, violet, dark chocolate and menthol that evaporate into a long-lasting, cool finish.

Rare Rioja from Gnarled Old Vines

Dominios de Berceo was named after the medieval poet Gonzalo de Berceo. Their estate vineyards, predominantly planted with Tempranillo, are situated in an area characterized by chalky-clay soils and influenced by the Sierra de la Demanda mountains' microclimate.

That said, the Perfiloxerico Rioja comes from a one-of-a-kind place. A small vineyard called Prefiloxerico, located in Bano de Ebro, a little village at the bend of the Ebro River. winery operates within the Rioja Alta sub-region, known for producing some of the area's most structured wines.

The winery specializes in Reserva and Gran Reserva wines, aging them in both French and American oak barrels in their underground cellars. Their production is intentionally limited, with aging taking place in temperature and humidity-controlled conditions below ground. The winemaking team employs both traditional Rioja methods and modern techniques, resulting in wines that typically show both regional character and aging potential.

The grapes were harvested into 12kg boxes only by selected staff—no seasonal workers get the call for this special assignment. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks, with daily pumpovers, before spending a year in French oak.

Now a decade on, the wine is showing beautiful aged character with a remarkable level of liveliness. For such a delicious wine and high performer, it’s a downright bargain at our price. Don’t miss it.
