The Story

Antonio Galloni once called Barolo’s Cannubi “among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world.” It’s a magical site that’s held in the same regard as Napa’s To Kalon or Burgundy’s Le Chambertin, and the Damilano family’s 99pt 2010 Riserva from the precious plot is a collector’s item that will gild any cellar.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Pale garnet in appearance, with a clear edge to the rim. Effusive, bold notes of fresh and jellied raspberries, rose petals, star anise, black and red cherries, truffles, sandalwood, and violets. Plush and smooth on the palate, with well-ripened tannins integrated beautifully into the juicy acidity and deep flavors of fresh blackberries, rose hips, red plums, cedar, strawberry, and licorice. This wine is showing gorgeously now but still has decades of life ahead of it. Drink now–2050.

James Suckling

The aromas of this wine are perfect with decadent and wild fragrances of sliced fresh mushrooms, truffles, blackberries. Incredible complexity. Full and balanced. Racy, refined and amazing. The spirit of Cannubi. Drink or hold. But why wait?

“The Spirit of Cannubi”

Antonio Galloni once called Barolo’s Cannubi “among the most precious vineyards anywhere in the world.”

The magical site is held in the same regard as Napa’s To Kalon or Burgundy’s Le Chambertin, and the Damilano family has farmed more than HALF of it for over 88 years. That makes their 2010 Cannubi Riserva 1752 a collector’s item that only they could make.

The name honors the year in which the bottle was first labeled “Cannubi,” and the wine hails from two hectares of Nebbiolo vines between 30 and 50 years of age. Grown in a marvelous vintage and aged for a stunning five years before bottling, this is a Grand Cru of Barolo—one James Suckling called “the spirit of Cannubi” in his 99-point review.

Grapegrowers recognized the sublime quality of Cannubi fruit as early as the 18th century, and they put the vineyard's name on bottles long before the Barolo category was invented. Derived from a local dialect, “Cannubi” translates as “mix of soil,” and refers to the geological anomaly that makes the vineyard a unique and magnificent site.

Cannubi is the only location in Barolo to feature both Tortonian marl and chalky, iron-rich Helvetian soils. This intersection contributes to the wine’s terrific complexity, manifesting both the graceful and muscular aspects of Barolo’s soul.

This desert-island-level wine deserves a special occasion, great friends, and a traditional Langhe meal. For inspiration we would turn to MICHELIN-starred chef Massimo Camia, who operates a restaurant at Damilano. This wine would pair brilliantly with his Raviolo stuffed with Tonda Gentile hazelnut cream, or perhaps his squab breast with porcini, hazelnuts, duck liver, and creamy potatoes. Enjoy soon, or cellar for another three decades!
