The Story

Two decades on, the 2005 vintage—rated 5/5 by Decanter—still stands as one of the greatest this century. And the perfectly preserved 2005 Bodegas Escudero Arvum is a testament to that historic year. This is what aged Rioja from a great vintage all about, and it’s drinking at its absolute peak right now. This is the winery’s flagship bottling, grown on the oldest vines (aged 80–120 years) on their Cuesta de la Reina Vineyard, and fully worthy of its normal triple-digit price. Rioja’s historic 2005 vintage isn’t two decades past—it’s here, today, in this bottle.

Wine Access Tasting Note

Deep garnet with a fading brick rim. The nose reveals layers of dried cherry, blackcurrant, and plum compote, interwoven with tobacco leaf, leather, and cedar. Subtle hints of balsamic, dried herbs, and dark cocoa add further depth. The palate is silky and expansive, with fine-grained tannins supporting flavors of stewed red berries, baking spices, and earthy truffle. A long, savory finish carries notes of wood, vanilla, and a touch of smoky minerality. Beautifully aged and drinking at its peak. Drink now–2028.

The 2005 Arvum was also sourced from a single plot with vines ranging in age from 80-100 years. The blend is 55% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo, with the balance Graciano and Mazuelo aged for 16 months in new French oak. Saturated purple in color, it displays a brooding, slightly roasted bouquet of incense, scorched earth, lavender, and black fruit compote. Layered and opulent on the palate, it is loaded with savory, spicy black fruit flavors, an expansive mouth-feel, and enough structure to evolve for 3-5 years. Drink this impressive offering from 2014 to 2025.

Where Were You in 2005?

Two decades ago, the sun was beating down on the Spanish region of Rioja. The typically parched vineyards had seen well-spaced rains in the early days of the season, and as the temperatures started to climb, June thunderstorms refreshed the vines. July, though hot and dry, saw plants that were hale and thriving.

From there, the vines cruised. Growers started picking in late September, enjoying a leisurely month-long harvest under flawless conditions. In late October, when the last grapes came in, so did the verdict: It was one of the finest Rioja harvests in memory.

Bodegas Escudero dates back more than a century, to when Juan Escudero first started making wine in a small mountainside cave. The winery gained momentum when Juan’s grandson Benito, inspired by his father and grandfather, dove into the family business.

The spirit of Benito is alive in the current Bodegas Escudero wines, which are sourced from the family’s holdings in La Rioja and Navarra—vineyards whose vines average 70 years of age. Most are planted in poor, stony soils on the southern slopes of Monte Yerga, where the extreme climate and diurnal temperature swing create grapes of beautiful ripeness and verve.

Arvum is a blend of Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano, and Mazeulo. Grown on the renowned Cuesta la Reina Vineyard, it was hand-harvested and selected in the vineyard. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks on indigenous yeasts before spending 16 months in aged French oak.

This has been resting in the winery cellars since the all-time great 2005 vintage, and you gotta taste it to believe.

*We recommend using an Ah-So wine opener to enjoy this bottling, as aged corks are delicate and may crumble or break easily.
