The Story

Tapiz has earned Wine & Spirits Top 100 Winery honors, and in 2019 winemaker Fabián Valenzuela—who has worked San Pablo for 20 years—and Jean-Claude Berrouet (known as the longtime winemaker for Bordeaux icon Château Pétrus) crafted a stellar wine, one whose ruby depths deliver complex aromas and a rich, multidimensional palate, framed by polished tannins.

In the glass, the wine is a deep, dark ruby color with a purple sheen at the edge. Aromas of dark fruits like plum and black cherry harmonize with layers of violet, spice, and dark cocoa nibs. The mouthfeel is rich and decadent yet restrained, with well-knit tannins and a lovely long finish. A powerful and elegant statement of the region. Drink now-2032.

James Suckling

A serious malbec showing tarry blackberries, graphite, violet extracts and a wide array of grilled herbs. Thyme, rosemary, iodine and hot stones. The full and intense palate delivers impressive concentration of blackberries and black chocolate. Caressing tannins are really silky but plentiful. Solid and quite long.

Vinous

The 2019 Malbec Black Tears comes from San Pablo in the Uco Valley and was aged for 18 months in first-use French oak barrels. A rich purple in the glass. The floral nose offers violet, lavender, crushed plum and cherry over a cedar bed. The palate is lean, dry and juicy, with an almost ethereal flow. Finely-grained tannins lead into a nimble, expressive finish. Having tasted this wine since its first release, I've watched it evolve over the years into its present incarnation as a precise, high-altitude Malbec as light and refreshing as the mountain air.

Black Tears is made with selected rows among Tapiz’s San Pablo plantings and benefits from the input of Bordeaux legend, Jean-Claude Berrouet, formerly of Château Pétrus. Scented, svelte and refined, it’s a wine that sashays across the palate. Mineral, detailed and complex, it has subtle wood, violet and graphite top notes and a core of plum and blackberry fruit.

A Towering Malbec

Malbec doesn’t soar much higher than the 2019 Tapiz Black Tears. Literally.

Grown on one of the highest-elevation sites in the world, it’s so simultaneously complex and elegant that it ranks among our favorite Malbecs.

At 4,430 feet up in Andes foothills, the sustainably farmed San Pablo Vineyard thrives in a region Vinous called a “jewel” of the Uco Valley. This microclimate boasts some of the area’s coolest growing conditions—thanks to its soaring, snow-capped setting—bringing a strikingly fresh edge to balance the ripe, dark fruit born of generous sunshine. San Pablo’s proximity to the Portillo Ridge refreshes the vines, which grow in limestone-rich soils, with chilly air from the mountains.

The resulting wine’s richness and complexity made it perfectly at home at the MICHELIN-starred of L’Atelier Miami, where we enjoyed it paired with Le Short Ribs—a magical combination of foie gras, short ribs, and cabbage. But it’s also perfect with a simple steak off of the grill or a slow-smoked pork shoulder, as well.
