Additional Wine Information

Story
Marselan is a new grape that’s catching on quickly in southern France’s Languedoc region. A hybrid of two varietals, it combines the elegance and structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with the lush fruit flavors of Grenache. Domaine Sallies is an estate winery located on the outskirts of the walled medieval city of Carcassonne, overlooking the Mediterranean. Amazingly, it is one of the rare wineries whose vines grow on original French rootstocks. Nearly all of France’s rootstocks are American, its native varieties having been wiped out by disease. For the last century, the domaine’s owners, the Gau family, have flooded the vineyard each spring to prevent infestation by the dreaded pest that decimated France in the 1880s. Our tasting panel relished this wine’s expert rendition of a cutting-edge grape that has terrific potential.
Sense
The bright bouquet melds fruity cherry and plum scents with a hint of dark cocoa.
Savor
Juicy fresh huckleberry and strawberry flavors refresh the palate with each easygoing sip.
Serve
This medium-bodied red has supple tannins and a crunchy acidity that’s perfect for sausages, pork and hearty poultry dishes. Unlike many reds, it can also handle a bit of spice. Terrific matches include Sausage Strata with Cheddar Cheese and Sun-Dried Tomatoes; Slow-Roasted Five-Spice Pork; and Sausage and Caramelized Onion Pizzas (recipes at williams-sonoma.com).
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 10 minutes before serving.
