Story
Sandler is the pet project of Ed Kurtzman, one of California’s most highly regarded winemakers through his work for wineries Freeman and Roar and his co-ownership of August West Wine. Known principally as a Pinot Noir specialist, Kurtzman brings his deft touch to Syrah and Zinfandel in this intriguing cuvee. The Syrah comes from Bennett Valley, a niche area in Sonoma where cool temperatures yield concise and aromatic Syrah and Merlot. The Zinfandel comes from a cool site near the Sonoma town of Santa Rosa that produces balanced, open and aromatic Zin. The fusion of the two varietals mixes red and black fruits to make a compelling wine that owes its structure and spice to Syrah and its succulence to Zinfandel. The 2009 is the first vintage.
Sense
Juicy notes of marionberry and boysenberry suffuse the nose, with hints of orange oil and ground black pepper.
Savor
In the mouth, the wine is anchored by deep blackberry and plum flavors, with classic Syrah hints of graphite and pepper.
Serve
Syrah’s classic partner at the dinner table is lamb, but beef, veal and pork will also make fine matches for this wine, whose ripe red fruit from Zinfandel will echo the sweetness of the meats. Stews and hearty casseroles make excellent choices, while grilling will add a bitter char to meats that will help offset this young wine’s tannins. The Sandler’s sweet fruit will play nicely against sweet-and-savory accompaniments like roasted fruits (peaches, plums, apples) and mild fruit chutneys.
