Additional Wine Information

Story
Marcucci Farms and Fava Brothers Vineyard was founded by two Italian immigrants, Martino and Lorenzo Fava, who journeyed to San Francisco in the early 1880s and eventually settled on 40 acres in the Russian River Valley. Six generations later, the brothers' descendants still work the land, and the winemaking tradition brought from Italy has never wavered. The 40 acres on which the Fava brothers settled in 1907 had been planted with apples, prunes, gooseberries and grapes, but over the next seven years, the brothers removed the fruit trees and berries and planted all 30 arable acres in grapes. Their style of tending vines "bush style" without trellises continues today. And the estate isn't the only player here with an Italian heritage. Zinfandel is the same grape that in southern Italy is known as Primitivo, likely immigrating to the United States only 30 or 40 years before the Fava brothers. The Russian River Valley is certainly cooler than other popular California Zinfandel locales like the Dry Creek Valley. But when planted in the warmer microclimates of this cool coastal area, Zinfandel can achieve beautiful detailed expressions, as this wine shows.
Sense
Bright plum and blackberry scents have a zesty black-currant edge, with bay leaf, allspice and tobacco adding spicy complexity.
Savor
Fantastic spice, acidity and luscious fruit flavors define this sophisticated Zin. Juicy plum and blackberry seduce the palate but stay bright and balanced, accented with spicy black pepper and cedar notes. Meaty tannins support the fruit flavors without overwhelming them. The lingering finish tastes of black fruit, clove and vanilla, offering lovely balance and clarity.
Serve
With its plentiful fruit and classical structure, the Marcucci Zinfandel is particularly food-friendly. Beef, lamb and pork are great partners, as are salty meats, such as a platter of artisanal salumi, grilled sausages or a steak sprinkled with kosher salt and then grilled. We suggest complementing the Marcucci's spice notes with seasonings like black pepper, clove, allspice or cumin. The wine's dark richness will also work wonderfully with stir-fries loaded with soy, hoisin and ginger.
Serving Instructions
