Story
Until very recently, “English wine” was more likely to be the punch line of a joke than something put on a restaurant wine list. Yet it was no joke when a little-known English sparkling wine recently took home one of the most prestigious trophies in the wine world. Amazingly, much of the south of England, including Surrey, lies on the same bed of limestone that gives French Champagne its distinctiveness and minerality. Vintners are taking advantage of this happy accident of geology and soils to grow varietals matched to the wetter English climate. The Bacchus grape has proved a standout, yielding crisp, citrusy whites that have become the basis for many of England’s newly celebrated wines. In this small-lot cuvee from New Zealander Master of Wine Sam Harrop, tart Bacchus was blended with an equal portion of rich Chardonnay. With flavors reminiscent of both a flinty Chablis and a juicy, zesty Sauvignon Blanc, it was produced in tiny quantities and sold out before its release.
Sense
The aromas are reminiscent of grapefruit and lemon, with a slight mineral edge.
Savor
This white blend offers medium-bodied lemon and grapefruit flavors on a fresh, silky palate. Although the juice was fermented and aged in neutral oak, the wood’s influence is unobtrusive.
Serve
Element 20 is a food-friendly white that can take on all sorts of table partners. Thanks to its fresh acidity and medium body, it will be delicious with everything from fish and shellfish to zesty poultry and vegetable dishes. Citrusy or herbal accents will play up the wine’s flavors; try it with Citrus Crabby Cakes or Cannellini Bean, Fennel and Shrimp Salad as a first course (recipes at williams-sonoma.com).
