Story
Picpoul is a white grape grown in and around Pinet, a village near the Mediterranean Sea in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon. Red wines dominate this part of southern France, but Pinet and five other villages entitled to use the Picpoul de Pinet designation sit on soil that favors white wine: a mixture of limestone soil, clay, sand and fossilized oysters. The Picpoul grape yields crisp, refreshing wines that make fine aperitifs or accompaniments to seafood. The Cabrol family first purchased vineyards in this region in 1969, gradually acquiring the 110 acres that comprise Domaine des Lauriers. Today the estate is managed by winegrower Marc Cabrol, who crushed the grapes for this bottling within 45 minutes of picking them-key to the wine’s vivid flavors. Made from the best grapes of the vintage, Cabrol’s Prestige cuvée is a step up from the winery’s standard Picpoul.

With its brisk flavors, Picpoul de Pinet is ideal as an aperitif. It also makes a superb accompaniment to oysters: the wine’s acidity acts like a squeeze of lemon, while the faintly metallic taste of the oysters echoes the wine’s minerality. The Domaine des Lauriers will also complement zesty vegetable dishes and salads, tangy fresh cheeses and light shellfish and seafood recipes. Mildly spicy ethnic fare such as an Asian stir-fry would be an excellent match as well.
