Story
Much fought over by France and Germany throughout the centuries, Alsace is today a peaceful place. Villages in this northeastern French region are pristine and picturesque, and their half-timber houses and cobbled streets are living memorabilia of the region's medieval past. For winegrowing, Alsace has a lovely climate. The Vosges mountain range shelters it from the worst of continental weather, keeping it cool but moderate--perfect for the white wine varieties Alsace is famous for. Domaine Rémy Gresser, founded around 1520, holds to a philosophy that hasn't changed much in five centuries: vineyards are farmed with great respect for the health of the soil, and wines are made naturally and aged in traditional wooden casks. Pinot Gris is a small part of Alsace's total production (the area is most famous for Riesling), but it's an important one, as many people think Pinot Gris reaches its pinnacle here. Wiebelsberg is a famous grand cru vineyard of Alsace consisting of marly quartz soils over a sandstone bed. It produces age-worthy wines of great power with lovely fruity depth.

Generous aromas of cherry, quince and white peach are balanced by the sweet perfume of honeysuckle and white flowers.

With its naturally high acidity, Pinot Gris will match the acid of a salad dressing and cut the richness of a curry. The varietal is an ideal accompaniment to fish and shellfish. If you visit Alsace, the wine is often poured alongside the region's freshwater fish.
