Story
Clouds Rest is a tiny estate winery that sits on less than two acres in the Sonoma Coast appellation. Founded by John Saemann, a passionate Pinot Noir collector, the property lies on Sonoma Mountain at an elevation of 1,250 feet, just above the coastal fog line. The mountain is mostly volcanic, with lean, stony soils that force vines to bore through rock to get enough minerals and water to survive. These soils, combined with constant coastal winds and drastic day-and-night temperature fluctuations, create a marginally viable, unforgiving environment in which to grow grapes--exactly the kind of vineyard that produces world-class Pinot Noir. Winemaker Anthony Austin, a revered Pinot specialist, creates small-lot wines from the best Pinot regions along the California coast. The 2005 vintage was a challenging one in Sonoma, where the combination of heat and dampness created problems in the vineyard. But thanks to assiduous attention, the crop at Clouds Rest was unscathed, offering a lovely wine with pure, concentrated flavors and the supple, spice-tinged grace that has made Sonoma Coast Pinots among the most exciting wines from California during the last decade.

Concentrated aromas of cherry and dark plum are backed with hints of chocolate, tea and forest mushrooms.

Pinot Noir is a versatile partner with food, and the Clouds Rest is no exception. Its clearly articulated dark fruits, earthy background notes and acidity allow it to stand up to even heavier meats like flank steak, though the wine will shine most when set against lighter fare like grilled veal chops or pork roast. Given the acidity and grace of the 2005 vintage, this wine would also make a lovely pairing with mushroom-based vegetable dishes, roasted or pan-sautéed chicken, and wild salmon.
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 15 minutes before serving.
