Story
This bold Zinfandel comes from a well-known vineyard in Rancho Cucamonga, a once-rural region east of Los Angeles that’s home to a precious cache of historic old-vine Zinfandel. Most of Cucamonga’s vines have been torn up to make way for suburban sprawl, but the Lopez Vineyard prevails, thanks to the efforts of passionate Zinfandel fans. Planted in 1918, the vines are nearing the end of their useful life, yielding just a few bunches of grapes each vintage. The payoff comes in the concentration and complexity of these tiny berries. Carol Shelton is one of the country’s most talented Zinfandel specialists. The Sonoma County–based winemaker seeks out small parcels of top vines, then vinifies them in accordance with each vineyard’s unique terroir. Consistent with its warm Southern California origins and the age of the vines, this full-throttle Zin shows off the grape’s luscious side.

Try the Monga Zin with red meats, pork or hearty white meat and poultry dishes; roasts, stews and steaks will all make terrific matches. An ideal barbecue wine, it’s fantastic with meats that have sweet or lightly spicy seasonings, such as honey-baked ham or spice-rubbed chops and steaks.
