Story
An emerging Spanish region, Priorat is turn­ing out polished, black-fruited wines that rival those of Rioja. The best examples are made from old-vine Cariñena (Carignane) and Gar­nacha (Grenache), with younger plantings of international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot showing enormous promise. When Cariñena is vinified properly and blended with soft, fruity Garnacha, the result is balanced, age-worthy cuvées of impressive structure and depth. This example from Buil & Giné combines old-vine Cariñena and Garnacha with small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah from vines planted in the last decade. A grape grower and wine merchant for generations, Buil & Giné had largely given up winemaking in the last half of the 20th cen­tury. But in the mid-1990s, they returned to their roots and became part of Priorat’s wine renaissance.
Sense
Fragrant, smoky aromas of roasted plums and baked apples are edged in notes of mint and chocolate.
