Story
Australia's Brokenwood winery is known for its Graveyard Shiraz, which comes from vines planted in a former graveyard and is perhaps the country's most prestigious single-vineyard wine. This multivineyard red provides a taste of the Brokenwood signature Shiraz style--supple, restrained and balanced--at a more accessible price. A benchmark estate founded in 1970 by three wine-loving friends, including Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday, Brokenwood evolved from a weekend venture into one of the country's most reputable wine labels. Since 1982, esteemed winemaker Iain Riggs has helmed the winery, producing mostly single-vineyard wines from across the Hunter Valley as well as from a few sites farther afield. Located in New South Wales, in Australia's southeast corner, the Hunter Valley is fairly humid and hot, with weak sea breezes moderating the heat. Unlike the massive reds of the Barossa region, Shiraz from the Hunter Valley is typically medium bodied and more savory (as opposed to sweetly fruity). Riggs aged the wine for 14 months in American oak, which imparted vanilla and smoke notes to the bouquet.

Highly aromatic, this wine displays meaty, spicy aromas of cracked black pepper, blackberries, smoke and vanilla.

Serve
The intense flavors, plump texture and tannins of the Brokenwood Shiraz will be well matched by richly marbled steaks, roasts and chops of lamb or beef. Shiraz and lamb are a classic combination, both in Australia and in France's Rhône Valley, where the grape is known as Syrah. Because of its savory, meaty notes, the Brokenwood will be especially delicious with tri-tip or rib-eye steaks. Choose accompaniments that play to the wine's fruity side, such as chutney or a moderately seasoned barbecue rub or sauce that goes easy on the sweetness and hot spices. Or highlight the wine's light herbaceous note with sage, thyme or tarragon.
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 10 minutes before serving.
