Additional Wine Information

Story
Bodegas Muriel was founded in 1986 when Julián Murúa revived his father's winery, which dated back to 1926, in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa, one of the three subregions in Spain's Rioja appellation. The name Muriel comes from the combination of the family name, Murúa, and Elciego, a quaint village surrounded by some of the best terroir in Rioja. Today, Julián and his son Javier strive to meld the winemaking traditions of the region with new techniques and technologies. Known for its distinctive chalky soil and sloping landscape, Rioja Alavesa has the highest elevation of the three subregions. It's influenced mainly by the climate of the Atlantic and the Bay of Biscay but also draws some moisture and heat out of the lower-lying Mediterranean lands to the east. Rioja Alavesa is known for lighter-colored, highly aromatic wines with great structure and mineral texture.
Sense
The nose offers elegant and well-defined notes of cherry and black currant with hints of vanilla, leather and dust.
Savor
Orange marmalade and licorice can be detected on the palate. While fluid and graceful, the wine does have some weight and power, which show through in the fine but chewy and flavorful tannins.
Serve
A fine Tempranillo like the Bodegas Muriel makes a particularly apt accompaniment to just about any pork dish, from grilled chops to Serrano ham to a cured roast. Lamb chops with rosemary and garlic or a well-seared hanger steak would also work well. The Tempranillo's fine structure also gives it the finesse to go with a traditional Spanish paella, whose savory saffron with rice, sweet peppers and charred seafood or meat will harmonize with the wine's ample fruit.
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 10 minutes before serving.
