Story
The steep banks of Germany's Mosel, Saar and Ruwer rivers are the source of the country's greatest Rieslings. Here, vines soak up more hours of sunlight, helping grapes to ripen fully. So precious is heat in these northerly climes that, after spring rains wash the rocky topsoil downslope, vintners collect the biggest rocks and place them at the base of vines higher up. The rocks absorb the day's heat and then release it slowly in the cooler evening hours, giving the vines more ripening time. This wine comes from a famous slate-speckled vineyard called Maximiner-Herrenberg, near the Mosel town of Longuich. The Eifel family, winemakers since 1635, owns a few acres of vines here; in recent years, vintner Bernhard Eifel has given his daughter and protégé, Alexandra, a portion of the plot to farm as she wished. Alex received her degree in winemaking from the university at Geisenheim and apprenticed at two top Riesling estates (one in Pfalz and another in the Mosel). For her namesake cuvée, she harvested the grapes quite late so that after fermentation a touch of sugar remained in the wine, yielding a vividly flavored and beautifully balanced Riesling.

Serve
While many white wines make excellent aperitifs, we recommend enjoying the Alex E Riesling with a meal. The wine's rich flavors and touch of sweetness will show best against foods that share those characteristics. Try it with sweet-and-spicy Asian dishes, which don't work with most wines but will be fantastic with this one. A slow-simmered sauce will echo the wine's thick texture: pork, shrimp or chicken curries made with sweet ingredients like pumpkin or pineapple would be delicious. The spice in korma or tikka masala sauce will be ably matched by this Riesling's acidity.

Serve well chilled: refrigerate the bottle for 45 minutes before serving.
