Story
The fourth-generation Barahonda winery is run by Antonio Candela Poveda and his sons, Antonio and Alfredo. It's a modern facility that spreads over 370 acres in Yecla, a coastal region in southeastern Spain where the hot, windy climate is tempered by breezes off the Mediterranean Sea. Perfect for winegrowing, the soils here are rich in limestone and low in nutrients, causing the vines to dig deep for sustenance. As a result, they absorb more elements from the ground and put greater energy into ripening their fruit. Sun-loving Monastrell--known as Mourvèdre in France--thrives here and, as the region's signature red grape, makes meaty medium- to full-bodied wines with luscious fruit flavors. The calcareous soils help the wine to retain acidity in this rugged climate. Most of the grapes for this bottling came from ungrafted vines more than a century old, which helps give the wine terrific concentration.
Sense
Brisk cherry aromas, supported by notes of blueberry and bramble, have a smoky edge.
Savor
Supple on the palate, the Monastrell is notable for its superb balance: no quality stands out over any other. Succulent plum flavors and a note of citrus zest are well integrated, offering a vibrantly fruit-forward midpalate that gives way to a rush of fine, succulent tannins.
Serve
The Monastrell's smooth texture will be enhanced by poultry and light meat dishes, such as veal or pork. Roast chicken is a great choice for weeknight meals, while duck or turkey confit would make fabulous dinner-party fare. The wine has enough deep fruit, though, to work well with leaner cuts of beef or lamb. Serve crispy herb-roasted potatoes alongside and finish with a hard aged cheese for a lovely Spanish-inspired meal.
Serving Instructions
Serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the bottle for 15 minutes before serving.
