Story
Axel Pauly is a purist whose mineral-driven wines have earned new notice for this small winery. Axel apprenticed under his father, Rudolf, before heading abroad to work at wineries in California and New Zealand. After studying at Germany’s premier winemaking university in Geisenheim, he returned home in 2006 to work alongside his father. In 2009 Rudolf Pauly passed the name of the winery to Axel, who now oversees vinification and aging of the wines. The younger Pauly combines a contemporary perspective with a reverence for the traditions and vineyards of his homeland. Every task from pruning to bottling is performed by a member of the family. While Axel runs the winery, Rudolf still takes care of the 13 acres of hillside vineyards. Grandfather Peter Pauly, a veteran of 60- plus vintages, provides a lifetime’s worth of knowledge. It’s this heritage that Axel Pauly celebrates in this estate-grown Riesling, aptly named “Generations.”
