Story
Fritz Hatton, who owns Arietta with his wife, Caren, is highly visible as the nation’s foremost rare-wine auctioneer. Principal auctioneer for Zachys, he also lends his charisma, energy and humor at the podium to such charities as the Napa Valley Wine Auction and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The winery’s name comes from the love of classical music that Hatton, also a talented pianist, shares with winemaker John Kongsgaard, who cofounded Arietta but has since left the business. Winemaking today is handled by Andy Erickson, known for making such cult wines as Dalla Valle and Screaming Eagle. “Arietta” refers to the Arietta movement of Beethoven’s last piano sonata (two bars of which are depicted on the label), and music is the driving symbolic force behind all of Arietta’s wines. The name “Quartet” refers to the four varieties used in this blend, each with its own identity but together playing in harmony.
Sense
A swirl of the glass releases aromas of red and black currants, violets, licorice and smoke.

Serve
While finely wrought blends like the Arietta Quartet have a certain versatility, this suave, complex red really shines with meat. The wine’s intensity requires food with ample protein and fat as a counterbalance. Look to simply flavored beef, lamb and game dishes, particularly those that are grilled or roasted. Accent ingredients like lentils, mushrooms and root vegetables will play up the wine’s earthy notes, while fresh herbs and leafy green vegetables will harmonize with its minty, herbaceous character. Serving Instructions
Decant 1 hour before serving, and serve a little cooler than room temperature: refrigerate the decanted wine for 10 minutes.
